Idea?
Ok, I think it would be really cool if someone could create an air intake that was on the roof of the car. I wish I had a picture or a drawing of what I am thinking of. I think it would make it look like a Supercar or something of that nature.
Steenport567,
Just my humble opinion, but I think that the air intake on the roof of the car would ruin the lines. Particularly, the center spine that is repeated throughout the car. However, if you are dead set on the mod, I would recommend that you use a low profile intake placed at the rear of the roof.
In the end, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I hope you enjoy any mods that you might perform.

with an air scoop on the roof of your front engine car you'd most likely end up here:

Thanks for all of the replies to this topic. I don't want to do it myself. I think if someone DID do it, it would be a little less intense than the one in the picture. That is the right idea, but make it look more like the Saleen S7. And yes, I think I would need a rear engine. Well, better buy an Ariel Atom then.
If you were going to do it. I would make it duel on both sides of the cars spine. That way you don't mess up the lines to much. I wouldn't do it, but if I was that would be the way I'd go.
As Andrew said, roof mounted air intakes work for mid or rear engine cars only. Think about it, how, on a road version XF, would you route the air back to the engine?
I think he wants the style more than the actual function. Just like hood scoops on last gen Ford Mustangs. They didn't even let air into the engine compartment. LOL

Steen, no offense, but I'm not sure what the intent was with this suggestion. As we've noted, a roof mounted intake would benefit a race car for cabin venting/cooling - as Woody and Derek have pointed out - or as an intake for mid mounted engines.
For a normal road car, this mod makes little to no sense since it's intent is undefined. If it's for cabin cooling, just remember that you are now going to have to deal with an opening in the roof of your car where water can enter. As an engine air intake, as I described earlier, this is a troublesome issue with the routing of the air back to the engine and the same water management issues still exist. Additionally, I'm sure someone here could tell you the negative effects on drag as well.
