Default Engine Over Revved

I had the engine warning light appear on the dash last week - so I took it to the dealer and waited around while they ran a diagnostic - about 20 minutes later the tech manager says my cars fine, the fault stated the engine had been over revved! Initially I thought I had been rumbled for some aggressive driving, but it stated I had achieved 22k rpm.

Anyway all was fine until I started my car the other evening - engine light came back on, cars running fine, fuel consumption is normal. Has anyone experienced this type of electrical fault? Or have any suggestions on what component(s) may be failing?

First off, the person who said you over revved your engine to 22K is breathing their own exhaust fumes. Not possible!

On the check engine light. I had the same problem with it suddenly showing up. It turned out to be the gas cap. It had not been fully tightened. (this has been mentioned before by several others)

If that isn't it, it probably has something to do with the smog system. But check the gas cap first.

There is a TSB for early 2004 models with this condition. Mine would do the same thing when downshifting hard into second gear. The dealer needs to perform a PCM reflash with updated software.
