Default 10w-40 was put in car

i didn't realize this but when I bought my car from the idiots over at car max they put 10w-40 in my car. I've since put 4,000 miles on my car. Do you guys think I did any damage to my car??? I'm going to get my oil changed today. I'm so pissed how can the people over at car max ignore the damn sticker that says 0w-40 is recommended. Freaking dumbas*es!!! Let me know your opinions cause if you think I did damage I need to go throw a fit at carmax.

Was it 10W-40 Mobile one or just 10W-40 regular oil? This could make a bigger difference.

I guess you mean 10w40 synthetic. If thats the case, I wouldn't worry about it at all.

It's not optimal, but I don't think you did damage, especially if you don't rev you engine too much. But, I would still throw a fit over at Car Max. If anything to have a record they did this.

I would definitely be sure it is documented for warrantee purposes and be sure they foot the bill for another oil change.

Gohoward11,

Where do you live? The numbers are a viscosity range. Zero is for very cold climates. 40 is for high temperatures. Here in SoCal it can be hard to find 0-40 oil because we never have severe cold as they do in some of the other areas.

It is more important that they used synthetic oil. If you don't trust Carmax, check with a local dealer. If you don't trust them, check with a local mechanic that specializes in MB.

If you're not absolutely sure, just change the oil. It will cost you a lot less than a blown-up engine!

Well I just went and got the oil changed at the dealership. $148.00 WOW!!! I looked at the bill and they charged 18.50 for the filter and 8.50 for labor. But the killer was the oil 9 times 12.15 per qt. WTF!! At Autozone it was 6.00 a qt. Geez!! Does anyone on here buy the oil then take it to Chrysler??? I figured that a way they can only charge me for the filter and 8.50 for labor and it would only cost me a total of $80.00. Does that sound right?

For this time I would take the bill to CarMax and ask to be reimbursed !!!

I agree with MYCROSS, but for the future, follow the threads on oil changes and you will feel better about your options to change it yourself, or taking it elsewhere. There's a ton of good information, opinions, and advice.

I had a post asking where you are. Depending on where you are located, 10-40 may be just fine. These numbers are for viscosity, how thick the oil remains at different temperatures. To need zero you would have to be in an extremely cold climate (sub zero). I am in SoCal and it is almost impossible to find 0-40. 10-40 works every bit as well for my climate. The key is synthetic such as Mobil One.

Chrysler lists 0-40 because they don't know where the car will be sold and operated.

Petroleum based oil needs additives to be have 5-30 have pour points (still pours) in the range of -30 to -40 deg F. These additives break down quickly. Synthetics do not use those additives and 5-30 naturally maintains a pour point of between -60 and -70 deg F.

If you want to read more go to: http://www.autoeducation.com/free_offer_thankyou

Bottom line is Mobil One is a great synthetic oil that will protect your engine. The viscosity rating is less important depending on where you live and operate the vehicle.
