Default May have solution to window pits and scratches

I just ordered a "Deep Scratch" resurfacing kit from Eastwood. Looks like it will do the trick of removing all of the tiny pits, scratches, and other blemishes from the windshield. The kit has grinder disks and polishing compounds that actually remove tiny amounts of glass to take the surface down to a new, fresh one.

I'll let everyone know how it goes and the results.

Cost of a new windshield: $300.
Cost of kit: $53 delivered.

The biggest complaints/concerns I have seen with this type of kit is the potential to cause a 'wavy' appearance when looking through the glass. This is caused by excessive removal in some areas vs. minimal removal in other areas.

So, make sure not to dig to deep and keep it all even and 'feathered' out.

I'm anxious to see how it works. I have some light scratches from an angry windshield wiper on my Cummins powered Ram.

Don't you have insurance to get a new windshield?

i.e. put a towel on your hood, throw a rock at the window, presto, new windshield time.

That would be insurance fraud though... And just unethical.

But do you want to really become something bad yourself? My conscience would never allow me to get away with it... I know other people can do those things and not care, but I couldn't do it...

If the window has been damaged, insurance Will cover it at 100%, no deductible. Nothing unethical about that, it's in your policy.

It's a comprehensive claim, doesn't go against you and I can assure you the pits were caused by rocks hitting the windshield which is a covered claim. While I don't agree with Arcrist's suggestion, I'm an insurance agent, I would turn it in and tell your insurance company rocks hit the windshield.
Fraudulent claims are what makes everybody's insurance go up.

You need to keep your political opinions to yourself, this is not the place for these kinds of comments.

That resurfacing kit sounds a bit scary and extreme. I don't like the sound of it. Let me know wow it turns out, but I think I'll pass on that method...

I noticed some time ago that if I looked real REAL close at my windshield, at the right angle, in really bright sunlight, a couple of tiny TINY pits. I took the XF over to my local Safelite Auto Glass and the tech, who's repaired/replaced windshields on my other cars, took a look and said it wasn't worth fixing and not to worry about it. The pits are so small that they can't even use the fill-in repair technology they would use for a small crack or larger pit. He said if I ever got a real pit/crack that the insurance would repair it for free or replace it (with and OEM windshield) if I was willing to pay my deductible ($250). If you asked me today, I would be hard pressed to even remember where the pits are.

Mine only really show up when the sun is in front of me during dusk or dawn.

I will eventually replace it, but for now, I'm hoping for that stray rock. ($100 deductible).

Mine are really, really bad. Looks like it was sand blasted. I can barely see out of it when the sun hits. Also, there are some bad wiper scratches. Going to try the resurface. If it doesn't work, I'll get a new one. No big deal, can't hurt to try.

Attaboy CGocifer...

I have spoken with several people about the scratches on my truck regarding the resurfacing kit. Some said it worked, some said it didn't - just depends on the severity.

Worst case, you get a new one - can't hurt too bad to try.

Let us know how it goes.

Don't believe it doesn't go against you. if you change insurance companies most will charge you more even for claims that are not your fault. It happened to me.

Comp claims don't go against you. Collision claims do. Some states may have different laws but for the most part it doesn't affect your rate, it doesn't affect your insurability unless you have an abundance of them. Then they can force you to take a higher deductible. Tell me about your claim senginc, I'm curious. I'm always glad to help.
By the way cigocifer why don't you call your agent and ask? tell him you have some rock chips in your windshield. A lot of places will also suggest what Fenwick223 said...they have a patch that works really well on small places and our company waives your deductible on repairs vs. replacement. If the window breaks further then its replaced.

There is a section of this forum that pertains to Political discussions. I suggest you two move your sword to there and stop cluttering up worthwhile threads with extraneous BS.

LOL I concur. Plus the insurance company decided that they could fix a bumper that was ripped so I had to pay for the majority of my repair out of pocket. To hell with ethics in some instances. You take it up the **** every day from companies that don't give a damn about ethics. Go for it.

As I am in law enforcement, I'll just stick to my resurfacing kit for now. If it doesn't work, I'll just buy a new one.
