Default All These Noises!

Hey. I just picked up my SRT 2 days ago, and am already annoyed by noises. I am sort of OCD so they really bother me. I already know that there are TSB's for the wind noise and the rear hatch rattle I am hearing. I have tried searching but am unsuccessful.

First of all... When I turn the key to the On/Run position, I hear and slight but noticable groan coming from the dashboard? Is this normal?

Also, when I turn the climate control fan on low, I hear like a churning sound from the fan. This may just be how it sounds, but neither of our other cars make this sound.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated before I look like an idiot trying to recreate the sounds for the perfection-lacking technicians.

Thanks!

I know how you feel. I too am a bit of a "perfectionist" to better state it.

These cars do make all sorts of noises. Not sure about the groan. There are some noises when the key is turned on. Some electrical and something that sounds like the hum of a pump. As for the fan, I had a fluttering, sound that turned out to be a leaf stuck inside the fan housing. It some how made its way from the cowl vents to the fan itself. Took the tech about 30 minutes to get to it and remove it. Aparently it happens more often than you would think.

The hatch rattle can be fixed by you in about 10 minutes. No need to chance your car being messed up by the techs. This will solve all of your problems with the rattle!!! Thanks to another member on this forum, here is the fix: Wrap about 4 turns of black electrical tape around the latch bar. When the hatch is open, this is the part attached to the car (not the hatch) that the latch "grabs". The tape will not wear and provides insulation for the rattle. The TSB for this is to replace the latch assembly with rubber insulated one. The tape does the same thing. I battled this for months until I did this fix. I have absolutely NO rattles now. The hatch could be and probably is vibrating all over the place, but I can't hear it at all thanks to the tape. Wind noise: I'm working on a fix for that too. I have a full warranty, but I will only let the techs work on my car if absolutely necessary. I've had way too many bad experiences with them in the past from scratched paint to a ruined interior that they had to repair at their expense after some serious bit**ing from me.

Are you sure the groan is from the dash ? Maybe you're hearing the fuel pump in the tank prime the fuel system.

Well, that's what it sounds like. I can't say that i'm absolutely 100% sure that's where it's coming from. But yeah, when you turn it to the on/run position (without starting it) you hear it. When you fire the car up, you can't hear it anymore because of the engine.

I get the same grown from my 06 dashboard. It's somewhere behind the radio & to it's right approx. It sounds like a relay permitting some feature to come alive. Never interfers with the key start. Just turn the key to on but not start for a few seconds & you'll hear the grown stop after that short time.

me too hear the noise when key at on position. I believe the noise is from somewhere in the front too. Someone told me it is the fuel pump. Anyways I think this is normal for our car so I am comfortable with it.

Ok good. I am fine with it as long as it's normal. I just didn't want for something to be wrong with it. Thanks for the help!

Yup, Smokey, mine does the same 'dash noise' moan & it's gone. Noticed something similar from the '04 Coupe so I've always thought it's normal for this car.

Alright. New noises happening. I usually drive with my music on. Not loud or anything, just something in the background. This week on my way to school, when I've been sitting at idle in drive, I hear a popping sound come from what seems like the right rear. When I mute the music, I hear nothing, so I'm assuming it's something with the stereo. It's not even bassy music when this happens. It's just really random.

I'm really funny about noises and this sounds really meticulous, but it still kind of drives me crazy. Any suggestions?

What did you end up doing with the stereo? Do you have the FM Modulation installed for your iPod? Still using the factory head and amp?

The fix for the hatch mentioned is only temporary. The tape will wear out. There are adjustable feet that are intended to take care of a loose hatch. I adjusted the "feet" to press a tad harder on the car body and the rattle is gone.

With regard to the noise you just wrote about - sounds like amp noise, probably from radio interference or loose wiring. Source depends on what you did to the stereo and whether or not that is the cause.

One thing you might notice that is cool, is when you bump the key and let go it keeps turning over till the engine starts! Anybody else notice that?

My (Jeep) Commander does that but my (2004) Crossfire does not. But then again, it always starts the moment I bump the key so...

Hey Smokey how does it feel to be 16 and have the coolest car in the school parking lot!!!!
You wouldnt believe the shake rattle and roll that my first car had.. the top of the gas tank had rust holes and you could smell it in the car, so no smoking allowed. It cost $400. But it ran. 1969 corolla 4dr (UGLY)
maybe it would be fun to hear everyones first car stories?

Thank you all for coming to the rescue, but I figured out what the problem was.

TIP: When burning CDs, always buy the better brand.

Go figure...

I had my wireless transmitter sent back because it went on the fritz, but as soon as I received a new one back, the noise was gone so I concluded that it was the CD I had burnt.

As far as the stereo, I am kind of at a stand still due to school and being so busy. I have sort of accepted the whole wireless deal, but I hope to actually get a wired FM transmitter and have a port somehow mounted on or near the plate housing the cigarette lighter. Then, I could still use my Roadtrip (or buy a Tunebase) to keep it charged. We'll see how that goes.

<Thrash> <Thrash>

Just out of curiosity, how much money have you spent so far on trying to use the fm modulator? Add that to how much money you will use to try the wired version, plus whatever it costs to mount the port (which in my humble opinion might look bad)? And when that proves unacceptable, how much more will it cost to get it over with?

I can tell you my answer:

FM Modulator (wireless) in Drive+PLay - $80
FM Modulator (wired) in Drive+PLay - $20
High-quality cables $40
Install of Drive+Play (free but took 2 hours and "shop materials)
End result - the sound sucked and I was out $140

I bought another head unit and plugged my iPod directly into the AUX port of the new unit using the Drive+Play. Sounded GREAT!

Now here's the point. I ended up taking the Drive+Play out because it was clutter, and run my iPod through the head unit. The interface cost me $5... That was one of those Best Buy "already open" deals and I used a $10 gift card I got from my points.

The point is, I could have saved $135 by not d1cking around with the FM modulator and going directly for the new head unit and interface. That is more than my Infinity Basslink subwoofer with wiring cost!

Smokey, trust me, if you're as picky as you say you are, don't waste any more money and time! Live with it until you can buy a new head unit and cut bait on the factory one!
