Squashed Oil Filter ?
Seems the last three times I've changed my oil filter the old one is all scrunched up when I take it out. Is this happening to others ?

I like to wipe out the housing when I change them also, but beware the theads on the housing like to slice your fingers.
I change them at 3500 miles as they are paper.

Did you "pop" the filter into it's seat when you installed it?
Otherwise it will be sitting a tad low on the column and might twist/crush when you tighten the top.
I suggest using the fleece filters as they look more sturdy.

The filter looks like it was compressed when it was installed. You should ensure that the filter is completly slid down on the shaft, most filters have a mark on the element to locate the correct depth.

I agree with Opticon and danimal, I don't think you had the filer seated all the way into the cap. I have always used the pleated filters and have never seen them distorted.
Chris I just did mine last Friday and no it wasn't squashed. I was surprised how dirty it was, I think it had about 3000 miles on it but it was in otherwise good shape. Replaced with a Mercedes fleece filter.
