Default Tag on top of engine ??

I recently installed a Needswings CAI.
This tag was just barely still stuck to the top of my engine.
What is all this information on the tag.
All I can understand is the date shown 09.12.2003 which I assume is when the engine was completed. I have a 04 coupe.

So much for the theory our cars use "Left Over" Mercedes engines.

Yeah; now we know they have "left over old" engines. LOL

The 112 010 95 02 number is the part number for whatever it was on. I'd say call the stealership and ask for a price quote on that part number and see what they say.

It's not really any important information. It's obviously all in German (logical for Karman), so I'll try to help out as much as I can:

(Top-Bottom, Right-Left)

I can't read the letters before the hyphen, but Sachnummer just means "article code" or parts number."

Baumuster simply means "make" or "model."

Motornummer = Motor Number

Werk is typically simply translated to "plant" or "factory."

PZ= I'm not sure what this abbreviation means.

If you can send me the word that begins "sonderaus---" I'll translate it for you. I just can't read it.

Montage-Plan Datum is actually the "erection date" or "assembly date." Also could be used to say when the engine was installed in the vehicle. This is most likely.

Sachnummer Kunde is the main "Part Number." This is typically used in the factory to align the correct engine with the correct car.

Lenkung is "control." Pretty much the equivalent of a "Quality Control" number.

And finally "hubraum" is simply the term for cylinder capacity and engine displacement.

It appears to me that this is more of an "in-house" label for the factory to help keep everything organized. Not really crucial as far as I can tell.

The engine date: This is the date it was installed in the car. It's really not old considering most cars are produced the year before they're released. Thus, your 2004 has a 2003 engine. Remember that it's also in a German date, therefore it's December 9th, 2003 rather than September 12th, 2003.

I hope this helps

Thanks Nick,
The two letters are MB
I think it's either Sonderaus funrungen or fuhrungen.
Thanks for all the info.
It's great to have a forum where someone always has the answers.
Thanks, Gary

Ok, the MB is for Mercedes-Benz. The MB-Sachnummer is simply the Mercedes part number.

Sonderausfuehrung ("ue" being the u with an umlaut ((two dots above it))) means literally "special model," or "specially designed model."

I don't think I'd throw the label away, especially with the Mercedes-Benz part number on it (that's pretty cool, I think), but by the same token, I don't think it's crucial.

Maybe just laminate it and throw it in the glove box or keep with it insurance.

Maybe a native speaker will know what the PZ means. I'm on exchange in Germany (not too far from Osnabrueck) and I'll ask around if anyone here knows what the PZ might be.

I just called the Mercedes-Benz dealer here in Dusseldorf. Apperently the PZ number is the "personal identification number for the time of manufacture." Basically, as the clerk explained it to me, it's a number used to keep track of the engines being produced within a time frame. The other numbers, when scanned, help to determine the actual time frame. His best guess was that they change every month.

Look's like your's was an early one in December.

Most companies want traceability of their parts, so they will have the manufacturer put various markings on a component...
Manufacturer, date of manufacture, material etc. etc. This help trace the parts when making changes and stuff goes wrong - standard practice.

Nick,
You have gone beyond my expectations here in getting this information.

Thanks for your time.
It's pretty cool that something in German that was just barely stuck to my engine
after 30,000 miles could be deciphered as to what all the data means.
I have laminated it and it will remain with the car /Owners manual for sure.
I don't even know if this tag is normally left on the engine after production is complete.
