Default flat tire repair canister

hello, i experienced my first flat tire on my 05 coupe but thankfully i was in my driveway. i used the pump and canister supplied which got me to the tire store. had to buy a new tire due to a sidewall puncture. a couple of days later i stopped by my local chrysler to buy another canister and got quite a shock. the price i was quoted was $141,00! ! ! ! after i recovered, i asked if they were checking the canister price or the whole package, pump, etc. and they confirmed that the price for the canister was as stated.
the parts man and i both agreed that a can of tire puncture liquid was under ten bucks but he couldn't do more. i got the chrysler customer number, called and spoke to some lady in india....she tried but could not understand my problem. she could only confirm the price. i could write to chrysler but question if a person with a brain would understand the problem.
i'm hoping someone on the forum may have tried to replace the canister and can share their experience with me. am i missing something??? thanks alot.

Where are you located? I have an extra one, pm me with your zip and I'll see what it would cost to ship. If you don't want to use this stuff, you can just pick up a cheap plug kit, which I prefer to use anyway. I spent 6 bucks on my kit plus 3 for a needle nose pliers.

4 years ago i bought a replacement cannister for around $60. even at that price it is a waste of money. i would not recommend replacing it at all. keep a vulcanized rubber tire kit ($4-10 at any automotive store) and a pair of needlenose pliers in your car to remove nails, etc. and repair punctures. the biggest problem with using the liquid sealant is that it will clog your valve stems and cause your tire pressure monitoring system to malfunction.

If it's a nail hole or something similar, you don't have to worry, you can always fill it and drive the on the tire, for weeks if need be because it won't deflate too fast, as long as you keep air in it. But, few months back I gashed a tire driving over something in the road. Tire went flat in half a mile. Must have been a one inch slit in the tire. Anyhow, the stuff worked, took a while but it did the job and tire held air. Had to buy a new tire and I recently checked the price at my dealer and it was the same $141. I won't be replacing it either.

thanks for your reply. i guess that i should have taken the tire to the store. as you mentioned the monitor is now malfunctioning. i guess that's the chance you take if you can't do anything but try to get moving again.
think i'll take a look at the suggestions members have posted about possible spares stored in the car (slk?). happy motoring...

you're welcome.

i use my tire sealant on my maiden voyage (in SC enroute home from FL to MD)! i punctured a tire on i-95 and the hole was too big for the sealant to work properly. eventually called a private roadside repair crew and got the tire plugged. i'm still driving on the same plugged tire 4 years later. but the sealant fouled the tpms and valve a few weeks later. i took my crossfire back to the dealer and had the tpms and valve repaired under warranty or at least it was no cost to me.

the spare tire idea isn't really practical for the crossfire. if you're close to home it's better just to get the car to the side of the road and call someone to pick you up and take your wheel to get a new tire if required. if you're on the road a distance from home chances are you may have a passenger and/or luggage which leaves no room to store the spare tire or the original wheel.

the best thing you can do is to get a tire repair kit since the vast majority of flat tires are caused by small punctures. i keep one in my crossfire and have used the plugs two or three times to fix our other vehicles without having to use a spare or remove a wheel.

I received my $163 Conti 18" original front tire from Tire Rack.com today and found a little brochure with some accessories listed in it.

One item that should tweak our attention is a "ContiComfortKit". It consists of: 12 volt air compressor, pressure gauge and liquid tire sealant all packaged in a compact kit. It sells for $79 which is considerably less than the $141 Chrysler quoted one of our members just for the cannister of sealant.

I like the service and the prices of Tire Rack. I ordered the tire on 11/29 and received it on 12/3 and paid at least $50 less than any local shop wanted. You would do well to consider them for your needs.

I emailed Tire Rack in January and had received no response to my question on how harmful the ContiComfortKit might be to our TPMS sensors. So--I called them today (5/14/2009) and was transferred to the Technical Group. The person I spoke with claimed they had never had a complaint regarding damage to the TPMS sensor when the Conti sealant had been used. He further stated that it was just latex and would harden enough to be "peeled" out of the valve stem and other areas of the TPMS monitor. I guess I would use one only if there was no other reasonable means of getting the flat tire repaired. If you have used your sealant and want to keep a full kit aboard this is certainly more attractive at $79 for everything than Chryslers offering of $141 just for the bottle of sealant.

FYI on this. See below from the online documentation:

Note: This product cannot be used on vehicles equipped with direct tire pressure monitoring sensors in the wheels. Use of this product on these vehicles could result in damage to the sensor inside the wheel. Please contact your sales specialist at Tire Rack for more information.

Would this include the sensor type in our wheels?

There are sensor safe tire sealants that go for around $15 a can.. I still prefer the plug kits though

Hope this helps I found 2 different brands of fix flat repair at wal-mart for under $10. -- Fix a Flat and Slime product. Make sure you read the label. Both of these say safe for tire sensing devices. There were other ones that did not make that claim. Fix a Flat was a better deal.

Besides having AAA, I think the repair kit and needle nose are they best way to go.

This thread has made me wonder if the OEM canister goes bad over time. Does anyone know the life expectancy of them?

Expires after 2 yrs or so I think. Check your can, I bet it already expired.
