Engine Coolant Gauge glitch, Take 5
Merry Christmas everyone, hope everyone is having a good holiday. A while back I posted a thread about my Engine Coolant gauge malfunctioning. The needle jumps up and down constantly and moves all the way up to high, causing the Auxillary cooling fan to come one, in turn causing the Check engine light to come on. I have had the car into the dealer four times now, "fixing" the problem and turing the light off. Everytime they have told me it is fixed and it is not. They have replaced the fuse for the gauge twice now after a diagnostic plug-in and that has not worked either. After picking it up, it will be fine for a day or two, and then back to the same old tricks. (Yesterday was 34 degrees in the moring and on a cold start, the needle shot right up to high) In total I have spent over $200 to still have a car that is still not repaired in almost a month. Im at a loss as to what to do next. Any ideas from anyone????
Thanks everyone and Happy New Year

Gather up all your receipts, and drive your car to a different Chrysler Dealership.
Talk to the service manager, show him all your receipts, and describe to him the problem that your car is experiencing.
An intelligent service manager will know that there are only so many reasons why a coolant gauge goes screwy.
1- The temp sensor is faulty. Easy tests to confirm this.
2- There is a fault in the wiring between the temp sender and the computer.
3- The computer is faulty.
4- There is a fault in the wiring between the computer and the temp gauge.
5- The temp gauge itself is faulty.
6- Battery or battery connection issues are starting to develop.
The important thing is to take your car to a different dealer now.

Hi,
Perhaps the engine is really overheating, that the coolant sometimes boils off and the gauge is responding to that condition by spiking or otherwise moving erratically? If the temp. sensor is replaced and you get the same results, be sure you are using a correctly working readiator cap, that the correct correct coolant is installed at the correct coolant level, that the belt driving the water pump isn't slipping. Make sure the radiator air flow isn't blocked. The fan must also work correctly (direction and speed). Still having problems, then think about replacing the thermostat. Next, check for coolant flow restrictions (maybe a bad hose that has seperated internally or collapsed) and / or a blocked radiator passage(s) and finally, for a water pump that isn't flowing coolant properly, could be an eroded or loose waster pump impeller reducing coolant flow. Some of these ideas could be expensive to perform or check out, so do the easy, cheap ones first. Good Luck.

Hi Guys,
Well, after my initial post way back on the 26th, I took the car in that night and it has been there ever since. The service manager told me there was "a short somewhere in one of three wires in the sending unit that they cannot quite pinpoint." That was Monday Dec. 29. And that, my friends, has been the same response from the service manager every time I call to check the progress. That was fine for a while, but it is now January 7, and I am starting to get a little angry. Called today and was told they were bringing it back in in the afternoon to try and "get back in there and have a better look at things" and try to narrow it down. I am no master mechanic, but it seems like this problem shouldnt be taking so long just to figure out, much less fix. I'm starting to wonder just how hard they are trying. Any ideas, suggestions, stories etc. from anyone regarding a mystery repair like this?
