Default Registration Fees...based on MSRP?

I just paid my MN registration fee to renew the tabs on my Base XF. I bought the car for 19k in 2007 new - but I had to pay a registration fee for a current value of $34,900!

Has anyone had success convincing the DMV that the registration fee should be valued at the market value as opposed to the "MSRP"?

I see you are in Virginia . I went to dmv web site, it states they use nada or sale price if bought from a non dealer. Was sales tax paid on it when you bought it? If so you are owed a refund. Here in Texas it is based on 80% of car value using nada. If you pay more than nada and tell them, they base it on the highest price. Just check dmv wed site it"s on there. Registration is based on weight. Appears like they were charging you sales tax on the original purchase. Dealer should have paid that when u purchased. Some states collect personal property when u reg but tax would be based on nada . Check it out!

You guys must be using that "new fuzzy government math." Lot of that going around lately.

I also had to pay based on the MSRP to the tune of $500+ for EACH of my Crossfires. OUCH!
Good thing is the fee gets smaller every year. Only $400+ each this year.

Its the same way here in Arizona. About 2 1/2 years ago I bought my SRT6 for $22K which was a great deal at the time. MSRP was $48K and the registration fees were close to $700.

In Oklahoma the tag, title, and tax are figured on the listed retail price, even on used cars. So even if you trade in your old car for 1/2 the price you still pay for the full retail price ( I'm not referring to MSRP, but what the price is on the window). But next year the tag renewal is only $95.00. Go figure.

Here in Georgia, the registration fee is $20 and the ad valorum tax is based on the current market value of the car. My 11 year old pickup was taxed at $24 this year. In 2000, when I moved here, it was $136.

When you buy the car, you pay sales tax, at renewal, they get you for ad valorum, so I won't pay it, whatever it is, until March.

I wonder that Deb Walker and other Georgians are paying?

One of the good reasons for living in Oregon. Vehicle registration is $32 per year and you register ever two years. You have to get a DEQ cert that costs $15 -$20, but it still beat the heck out of CA fees.

Too bad our income and property taxes are so freaking high......

but we dont have a sales tax

Holy crap...and I was complaining about the increase in reg fees to $130 for two years. Good to know New York doesn't have the highest prices for everything.

Michigan is based on MSRP and age, but the XFs still cost me $171/yr each x 3. Add in two Audis, and I cut a grand worth of checks to DMV last year. With Michigan's budget >billion in the red, I look forward to many other opportunities to bend over and grab my ankles.

Hmm, maybe I should set up a P.O. Box there and save $200 a year for plates.

Don't get me started on this subject because it will turn into an ugly political discussion.

This is why I am proud to live in Texas.... because I never heard of such a thing before. We get charged a registration fee per year and that is it! You don't need to tax the hell out of people in order to run a state. We have no state income tax and do better than a state with income tax. Just shows you how the politicians are blowing your hard earned money! You elected them.... I didn't! If it were me I would kick them all out of office and refuse to pay these dumb fees.
