Default and the problems cont...

so to add to my already frustrating experience of having hoods on national back order and my car still looking terrible with the damage. I had bought a brand new set of goodyear eagle f1's back the beginning of august for fronts and rears. since then i had put 7000 miles on them all highway going back and forth from norfolk to my fiancees house in ny. so i was driving home last weekend and its raining im driving about 60mph down i81 i start to hydroplane i dont think much of it at first then it continues so i get a little worried and pull over and start to look at my tires well my fronts have about half tread so i was not worried then i go to the rear and to my shock they were completely bald. honestly they looked like racing slicks with some groves on the side then i rub my hand down the tire where the groves used to be and i get some chewed up rubber on my hand like it was deteriorating thats both rear tires. ive never seen anything like that. so i brought them back to the place i got them from and asked they said it looked almost like they were burnt out bc they were slick in the back and the rubber was peeling. anyways since goodyear does not offer a mileage warranty there was nothing they could do and i should contact goodyear with a complaint bc no way should they be bald at 7k miles especially highway miles...in all realism though in your experiences do you think goodyear is going to be willing to resolve the situation? or am i most likely screwed?

Maybe it's way out of alignment from the wreck.....(when someone hit it while it was parked)? That can eat up tires pretty quick.

They must be awfully grippy tires if you only have half tread left on the fronts as well. Geez, I have 37,000+ miles on my Contis and they're still going strong. Figure I'll get to at least 50,000 with them.

You know-that's weird. I had to replace my OEM Conti's at 17K. Rears were almost to the wear indicators. 10K on my Falken FK 452's and they look new...

The fact that they were completly bald tells me the wear is even, albeit evenly terrible. Any chance that the tires are rubbing on the wheel well? If it were a ball joint problem, you would have cupping. If it were an inflation issue the center would be worn (over-inflated) or worn on both sides (Under-inflated). If the tires are worn on one side, the usual cause is camber problems. These would be the main reasons for rear tire wear. On the front, you would have additional issues.

If you rule out the above, I would go back to the manufacturer and tell them what happened. They could very well be defective tires.

I agree, contis lasted only about 15K on my folks roadster.

Come on though Max, I have 11K on my 452s and I am getting new rubber put on tomorrow LOL they are nearly bald, think I drive it hard?

I have 33k on my roadster and the fronts are a little more than 1/2 worn and the rears are almost to the wear bars -- replacement planned next summer. My SRT6 has 14k and all four have excellent tread, even with occasional tire spinning. My son's 2007 has 13k miles and the tires look new. All have the all-season Contis.

It sounds like a defect or you've been burning out and sliding thru corners more than you remember,

My original Contis lasted 40K miles. My new set now has 16K miles and they still look brand new. They ride perfect. Why anyone would put goodyears or any other brand on the crossfire is beyond me. My advice is to stick with the brand it came with... the Contis.

Probably from the simple fact that if you want to drive the car aggressively, be able to stick to the road while doing so, and receive feedback from the tires, you need not only a better rubber compound, but a better tread pattern.

Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires out stick the stock Continentals not only in the dry, but in the rain, too. The tread pattern allows for the removal of water between the tire and the road than the tread pattern on the Continental's, and offers better grip while doing so.

There is a wonderful saying in motorsports:

"The best you've ever used is the best you know."

That not only applies to tires, but applies to cars, motorcycles, and various other things in life.

Until you try a tire other than your Continentals, you will never understand why so many other Crossfire owners use the tires they do that don't come from that manufacturer.

And if the Continentals were the best tire for the car, why were the Michelin's also offered on the car from the factory? And why aren't they the tire that every other car on the planet rolls on?

Simple answer:

They aren't the best tire.

BC.

I think the bigger problem that needs to truly be addressed is the fact that in 7k miles, you haven't inspected your tires once. You should have known that there was an issue with the tread depth long before you started driving in the rain and started to hydroplane at 60 mph.

the reason i have not really checked my tires before hand is ive had them for labout 3months and with my round trip from base to home is 1200 miles they add up rather quickly but yes since you mention it somewhere around 3k miles i was hydroplaning real bad coming back to base. i was only going 60 too and since they were new i never really thought to look... on another note i know they were not overinflated bc when i got them and shortly after i checked the pressure and it was 32psi in the rears. granted i know i prolly should have checked the whole tire out sooner but those 15hr worknights for 2 months had my mind elsewhere i guess. worst part is i still wash the car everyweek and never really checked. guess you live you learn..

I've never seen tires wear out to that level that fast, unless they were "R Compound" tires - and these certainly are not.

Is it possible that whoever sold you the tires sold you already worn tires? Did you look at the tires after they did the installation? Did they even install new tires??
