Default a whinning sound from motor?

As I speed up a whinning sound increases in sound from the motor. I was thinking altinator? Its like a waaa sound like somthing was spining cause the faster I go the louder the sounds goes I just started hearing this. I hear the sound slightly at idle as well. Please help. If it is alitator or any part can you give me average or best price on parts and is it easy to fix? Thank you

this is a sound clip i took.
YouTube - Sound from motor. Help?

sounds like its coming from that black turbine looking thing in the middle. but also recently my idler bearing blew and i had it fixed at some hood shop cause i was stranded on the high way. the sound is some where in that area. and when i press the gas the sound increases. so maby that is it? possible. if so what do i do??

altinators will whine when the bearing is getting bad, but maybe that shop didn't install the idler pulley correctly...

How can you tell what's going or not. First I thought it was the altinator but idk then maby the idler bearing? Could it be in side the motor? Or could it be theat black thing in the middle on the pic. Like turbine looking thing? Idk but this sound is like a super charger

Any luck with this? My car has been doing the same thing for a couple of weeks and its driving me nuts. A guy I work with who has a C Class mercedes noticed it today when I left for lunch. He said the same thing happened to his car and the dealer replaced a pulley wheel. Anyone else heard of this or have any other ideas?

The idler pulley is probably the problem. Not too hard to replace yourselft if you have the right tools. It is just visible in the picture above. These wear out and have to be replaced. I got one cheaper at the MB dealer. I just told heim I had a 2003 SLK320. to replace you turn the tensioner to remome the belt and then unscrew the center bolt on the pulley. Do the opposite to put back together.

Hey thanks Lantana. I just found this post so that must be the problem.

I am sure that is what it is but you can verify by taking a very long screw dirver and hold the center to the center mounting bolt of the pulley while it is idling and put your ear against the handle of the screw dirver. You will hear it loud and clear if this is the problem. Just be careful as this is potentially dangerous. an automotive stethiscope is the best to way to do this but most people don't have one.

It was the idler pulley. $40 and about 5 minutes to change.
