Selling Crossfire... Should I?
Opinions please! I am considering selling the crossfire after 5+ years of ownership. I own it free and clear and love the car. But I am considering selling it for 2 reasons (use the money for the next purchase plus it frees up space in the garage). I can only have one toy...
I know most of you would say "don't do it" but I am considering making a special purchase. It is a sports car and a car I have been dreaming about for the past 20+ years. I always promised myself I would buy one and I am now seriously considering it. Back in college I used to drive out of my way just to get a glimpse of this car.... and promised myself I would buy one when I got a real job. I never did! Years later the itch is still there!
Here is the dilema....
Do I give up the crossfire that gives me no trouble... or buy an older car that may require more attention simply because I lust for it? The crossfire is paid for. If I bought another car I may need a loan for 10K after I put money down and sell the crossfire. Keep in mind, this is not a daily driver and considered just a toy! It is a 30 year old car in excellent shape and may need attention over the years as things may break.
Would you guys spend the money and go for the dream car? Would you give up a trouble free crossfire for an older car. I love the crossfire.... don't get me wrong.
Just not saying what the dream car is because I don't want to get off topic. Most of you may not find the car I want appealing... I don't want to get into a debate about that. To me it is very appealing and that is all that matters.

The most obvious thing first and foremost (and to cover one's a$$) is to say that this decision is entirely up to you.
That being said, my personal take on this is that clearly you love this other car and always wanted it, so I say go for it! Sounds like if you didn't you'll always be saying "what if?" Besides, if it turns out to be a repair nightmare you sell it, too, be content that you can say you had it for however long and...buy another Crossfire!!
Now...please PM me and tell me what you're looking at - I'm dying to know!!

Now, I am going to say upfront that I am in a conflict of interest, as I am the "looking to buy" guy on other threads. So, not to beat about the bush I say sell it
Now for my opinion. The feeling coming through the post is that you made a promise to yourself years ago and now you are going to cash that promise in. My years of promises to myself has taught me that it is the most important promise you can make, I have learned the hard way what it means not to fulfill them.
Keep both and enlarge the garage
I'm at the same point although I don't quite own mine yet. I leased it then liked it so much I bought it. I'm now going on 6 years in it, the longest I've ever owned the same car. Its basically still new, 14,500 miles on it. There are several cars out there that have caught my eye. One I've wanted since I was 14 which is a Cobra, not the Mustang Cobra. One thing I am thinking though is that oddly enough there are more Cobra's at our weekly get together than Crossfires. The Crossfire is still a very unique car and that is part of my love for it. The other issue is I'm not getting any younger. Turned 60 this year so my "Toy" days are numbered. If I do anything probably wont be till this time next year but it is something I'm thinking about. So I kinda know what you are going through, it's been a great ride but do I want that dream car? Tough decision. By the way a customer of mine who has a Factory 5 Cobra has invited me to ride with him this Sunday to a Cobra get together, just what I need!

Blackie, I say go for it. You may never get a chance at that "dream" car.
Crossfires will be around for a while and relatively cheap. You can always come back when the itch is over.
Old cars are fun and yes work, but often worth it.
I do miss my '57 T Bird. Walked past it in the garage for 15 years when somebody else owned it. Did the same thing for 10 more when I owned it.
But I can say, with pride and pleasure, that once, I owned one.

Yes!
You absolutely buy whatever this mystery car is, and enjoy it thoroughly.
It's only money, in the end run, and you should always do the things in life you WANT to do, because, what's the point of life otherwise?
Buy the car.
Don't look back!

I went thru the same dilemma when I bought the XF. My choices were a XF that I thought was a beautiful modern classic but you still saw "nonbelievers" out driving to the grocery store or the '67 Impala that I also loved but be a constant project. I went back and forth for over a year while trying to find the "perfect" yellow XF & a mostly/completely restored Impala. At the end of the day it came down to my pleasure vs work ratio that I was willing to live with on my toy car. Obviously I bought the XF, met the crazy crew here & couldn't be happier! I do still break my neck looking at every '67 Impala I come across, but for right now I wanted "turn key" fun. Of course I broke my own rule & bought an older house just so I could have a garage for the aforementioned toy (wouldn't have done THAT again), but I am 100% happy with the XF. That being said, if you have the time, knowledge, ability & funds to get your dream car ... what are you waiting for?!?! Go buy your rolling piece of American Art & make sure to post pics! We will still like you if you don't have a XF!
Doc like I said I'm not looking at a Mustang Cobra, I'm looking at a Cobra Cobra. You can't rent them unfortunately. Its a very tough decision.

Are you talking about a kit car or the real thing? In the 80's I knew of an exotic car rental in Dallas Fort Worth area where you could rent just about anything. (I think it was $100 a day back then)
Les

Les - Factory 5 kit. 19k you supply the engine, wheels tires, tranny, rear end and paint. The frame comes ready to mount the engine of your chioce and is powdercoated. You can have a really nice car for about 30-35k. Unfortunately no one here rents them. By the way Factory 5 can't call it a Cobra, they call it an MK4.

OK, you sell your Crossfire and buy your dream car....but does the dream car have a forum like this one - with wonderful people that you can "talk" to everyday???? Of course, you will always be welcome here, even if you don't actually own a Crossfire.
I was crazy about the TR6 until I sat in one; No-Way!
However, you have to follow your dream! If you don't do it; you will always wonder; wtf!
If I knew how much we would enjoy the X-fire; I would have bought a beater convertible 20 years ago.
I say; Go for it!

I say go for it...after you're sure it is definately as great of a dream as you hoped it would be.
I was crazy for a Prowler. Had been since I was a teenager. After my XF was totalled a couple weeks ago, I drove 2 hours (the nearest listing) to test drive one. I left disappointed that it was such a huge letdown. Handled so-so, exhaust note was tiring, braking was long and the interior felt like the parts bin job that it is. Great looking car but ended up back with an XF again.
None of us can tell you what to do. Its up to you. And hey, if you find out after a while that the dream aint all its cracked up to be, I'm sure there will be another XF out there for you.

I can't speak for Blackcrossfire07 and I don't want to hi jack his thread but I understand what he's going through. The Crossfire is a very special car, very hard decision to make. Some can afford more than one toy unfortunately I can only afford one. This Sunday I am riding with a friend of mine who owns a Cobra to a Cobra club breakfast. I've never riden in one, driven one. I'm sure I'll get an earful about trying to build a kit. His is a Factory 5. There are a number of Cobra reproductions out there, the Super Performance being my favorite but its way out of my price range. And to answer Winston's question "does your dream car have a Forum like this one?" Yes. Just about any performance oriented car has a forum of like minded enthusiasts.
A few years ago my wife and I were out on a Saturday afternoon. We were coming down the inside lane of a three lane highway and I caught the sound of a high performance engine out of my left ear. When I saw what it was in my rear view mirror (a Cobra) I got a huge grin on my face (you know how we all talk about the Crossfire perma grin ?). It shook our car as it went by. My wife asked "what's with the goofy grin?" what she couldn't see were the goosebumps on my arm.
