Default Car overheated.

About a day or two ago my girlfriend complained of a light squeal coming from the engine bar on start up. Which would last until warm or when the car was put into gear. Last night the car got real loud and the temp gauge flew up and overheated. Causing the usual coolant overflow and steam...

After letting cool and refilling coolant we started the car and that squeal was abnoxiously loud. I was able to drive it to the dealer with no problems. The dealer said there was no "recall" for a fan on the vin so im assuming he ment it was already done?

The cars a 2005 Limited with 38k. I thought it sounded like a bad tensioner pulky but i dont believe that would cause an overheat. Possible bad water pump?

Edit: i started the car and put the ac on.. seemed like the fan was working properly.

Not sure if this is your problem... But there was a recall on the fan clutch or something years ago. The previous owner of your car may not have had it done. I have a 2005 and had the work done. I got the letter in the mail.

Ya i herd about that. Since shes a new owner of the car (bought begining of this year) we got no recall info. However the local chrysler dealer said no recalls on the car so im assuming it may have already been done. Unless the dealer doesnt wanna do the work for free...

TSB: 30-Mar-06 - E19 - Campaign - Cooling Fan and or Motor Assembly Replacement

Make sure the dealer knows about this.

BTW-a Chrysler dealership will and must show you they have records of your VIN/car having had the work done to it as per this "campaign". Don't just let them say "Nope"-have them prove it. They have records.

Go to this website and type in the last 8 digits of your VIN and it well let you know if E-19 recall has been satisfied.

They must be using a gold plated pump, and their Service guy's are dressed in evening wear.

I'm sure there is labor involved, but these Dealers need a reality check.

Their hourly rates are off the charts...that goes for all them, not just Chrysler...!!!

You might be better served locating the part on your own (eBay), and having a local mechanic familiar with MB take care of it.

With winter in play, it might not be the type of job to tackle outside (by your lonesome).

I'm sure the radiator fan would have to be yanked, maybe even the radiator to gain easy access...

Ya well i have a heated garage. Also have built cars and motors before so i do have some knowledge. But never worked on a mercedes 3.2 before...

Also ive found oem, remanufactured, and autozone brand.

Would i better off with a reman? The autozone brand comds with a lifetime warranty however.

Folks more familiar with these types of units on an XF will probably chime in.

In my experience pumps/alternators/starters and stuff like this are typically refurb, rebuilt, or reman, cause buying new in the after market is usually prohibitive from a cost perspective.

So if you go this route, it's all about the warranty (and something like an Autozone is local and should be around for a while if you need a throat to choke).

I haven't had this type of unit ever Serviced at a Dealer, so I'm not sure if their policy is always New, or a refurb where appropriate...

As it is a "Campaign", it is a safety/drivability issue. DC has admitted fault in design or application. these are generally treated as a fix it anytime for anyone issue.

I just called my local Chrysler service guy (I know and like him) and he told me that as a "Campaign" it would be treated as a "Recall" and would be fixed on their dime. No cost to the present owner.
