Oil Leak or Faulty Oil Level Sensor
So back in December the car got an oil change, was driven about 45 miles to get the new oil through the system, and was put into storage for the winter.
I took her out for a drive on Wednesday because we were getting a string of 50 degree days. When I took her to work in the morning, the oil pressure light came on. On the drive home, I the light was still on and I got an alarm that I was "short" 2 quarts. I went to Advance Autoparts and put in two quarts. The light went away and no more problems. I drove the car yesterday for about 90 miles with the light never coming back on.
On the drive to work this morning, the light came back on again for oil pressure..it's the oil canister with wavy lines below it. Then 15 minutes later, the alarm disappeared.
Anyone have this experience after taking a car out of storage???? I am the farthest from being mechanically inclined and could use some help. Thanks

You need to check things out the old fashioned way and check the oil with your dip stick. You should have done this before putting the two quarts in. If you are not blowing tons of blue smoke or leaving puddles where you park, you are probably fine. Make sure you also know the difference betweeen low oil level and low oil pressure. Check your manual if confused. If your level is fine and you are getting low oil level, then you need to check the connection on the sensor which is located on the passenger side of the oil pan sump or replace the sensor. If you have low oil pressure this can be serious and you should not be driving it.
I checked the dipstick and it was not on the "full" marking capacity. The light appearing is an oil canister with wavy lines below it. I'm trying to look through the manual again to see if there is an explanation for this symbol.

Two quarts is a lot of oil to use in so few miles, you would be trailed by a blue cloud on the road or a huge puddle under the car, just like the Exxon Valdiz had been there.
My guess is 2 quarts short after the oil change.

I had the same issue. So here you go
Firstlydo you use 0-30 W oil (The one it tells you to use) I have had an issue with the oil weight causing the light to come on and off.
You want to check the oil level is ok (you done this already). then you will want to check the Oil sender unit is ok and your oil pressure is good. To do this you need a pressure gauge (with a M20 or M25 fitting on the end). Attach this to the oil sender unit which is located under the oil filter (FYI this is a pain to-do and right next to the pulley and belts, also you need to know the oil pressure values for the different RPM values, so I had a dealer check this for me). If your oil pressure is good then you most likely will need to replace the oil level/pressure sensor.
So to replace the sensor you will need to order the sensor (use autozone as they are about $150, and the dealer is $209) and also order a oil pan gasket and RTV sealant (~$35).
Simply drain the oil, remove the oil pan (use the tab on the drivers side to break the seal, mine was on pretty hard). take out the sensor (4 bolts). Clean the pan and the lower engine face, install new sensor and seal it back up. I took me about 3 hours to complete this. its not that hard and download the service manual from this site.
Since I change ours it worked great no issues. Up to the point that an uninsured car hit me... Now looking for a good body shop in Houston..

Drove out to lunch..after 10 minutes of driving, the light came back on..5 minutes later it turned off..
On the drive back to the office, the light turned back on, then off, then back on again within 15 minutes.
I haven't looked for oil spots under the car yet. I'll check it out when I leave the office today.

If you paid to have your oil changed, a common problem with mechanics that do not know this car is to only put in 5 quarts instead of the 8.5 the Crossfire requires.
I did the oil change myself and put a little under 9 quarts. I will monitor to see if there is any oil leakage. But it sounds more like a sensor issue, but still to be determined.
Maybe not to late to opt for that Max Care Contract....

From the repair manual,
Oil level indicator lamp The Oil level indicator lamp illuminates
if the engine oil drops below 4.25 liters (4.5
quarts), indicating that the engine oil has dropped by 1.9
liters (2 quarts).
Obviously the 4.5 quarts is wrong if the level has dropped by only 2 quarts.
If the sensor is correct you have lost 4 quarts now.

You need to look at the oil filter housing, with the engine running, and see if there is an oil leak there. That is the most common location for oil leaks right after an oil change.
You also need to look at the belly pan under the engine to see if that is where all your missing oil is going to.
Stop driving your car, and look for the leak.

My car did same thing, changed oil 8qts, drove 2500 miles on a trip no light. Car set for a few weeks high
came on, look for leak, none found , added 1/2 qt still had light. Added another 1/2 qt. still had light, Then i
remove a qt, still had light. Drove about 70 miles alarm came on said 1 qt low, added 1 qt light still on, then
added another 1/2 qt light still on, added another, lite on then alarm showed over filled. Got home and
pumped out 1 1/2qt added back 1/2 qt now all correct on dip stick. Took me a while to figure out how to read
dip stick. So now i have come to the conclusion that sensor is defective. Car ran fine during all this.

Yes..there is a leak..it's coming from the actual filter housing..the filter was very loose. Either the largest of the o-rings failed or i have it in the wrong position. Is the large o-ring supposed to be visable when the cap is tightened?? Right now you can see it between the housing and the filter cap.
Would someone please take a picture of how their filter housing looks when the o-ring is put in correctly, or show where the largest o-ring is supposed to go??

There are some brands of oil filter kits that are listed as being for the XF in which the "O" rings are too thin, they will leak. The Mann filter is one of the correct ones!
My car is in storage so I can't get you pictures....however, the large o ring should not be visable as it sits in a groove just a little further below the filter housing cap flange.

With the loss of up to 4 quarts this engine must look somewhat oily.
All the O-Rings go into grooves, that is the way they came out. The O-Rings should be a little proud of the O-Ring groove or it will leak for sure.

New to the forum. I bought my 2005 SRT 6 as a side toy with just over 40k on it, had the oil changed upon purchase with 8.5 quarts put into it per the receipt. At almost exactly 1000 miles of driving the same light and warning message came on. I stopped grabbed 2 quarts of oil and dumped them in and low and behold the light went off. Almost exactly 1000 more mile later or 2 Tuesdays ago the light came back on and I was driving my Chairman around my market and didn't really have time to check the dip stick so I just dumped 2 more quarts in (and cussed a bit). Since that day it sat in covered parking with the exception of the 20 minute trip to the hardware store last Sunday and to and from work yesterday and guess what the damn light and warning came back on. I knew there was no way with the lack of puddles that I had driven 2 more quarts of oil out of her with just a visit to Lowe's. This time I went old school and checked the dip stick... Guess what I discoverd? Remotely clean oil about 1 to 1 and a half inches over the max fill line on the dip stick! This has to be a sensor issue now. My question is do you all who don't have time to do your own work take your crossfires to a Mercedes specialty shop or just regular old mechanics?
