Default Good buy?

hello all,

i was wondering if you could give me your take on a crossfire i was looking at purchaseing. its listed locally through Craigslist. its a 2004 automatic, silver/grey with black leather. it has the tpms and all other options available. i drove it today and it ran great. the only thing that had me a little concerned is that it has 172,000 miles. is there any known problems that i should look for or anything to pay close attention to? there asking $5700 but i think he will take $5000. do you think thatd a good price? or should i just keep looking. any and all information will be extremely helpful as I'm looking to make a decision by this weekend. thank you everyone in advance.

There is no reason for high mileage to adversely impact the car's overall reliability if the basic maintenance has been always done at needed intervals. Sounds like the car was used for mostly highway driving needs as 170k would be hard to accumulate with city driving commutes over 7 years. These Mercedes-Benz powertrains are really robust and should perform reliably for years. Biggest issue is getting Chrysler-specific parts for the Crossfire. But that's what The Forum & its members are good for.

The car might need a new steering stabilizer, but these are only $30 from several eBay stores where nearly all of us buy them. This part is essentially a 3-4 year replacement anyway. And you might want to check to see of the original OEM battery is still installed. If so, this will need replacing soon. That's a $100-$150 purchase, depending on where & which battery you purchase.

I tend to agree on trying to get a lower price.

I didn't check the Book Value, but I would guess that an Xfire with 170k and 8 years would be somewhat lower than $5k (if it shows any value at all).

I'm sure for insurance replacement, it ain't that high.

One decent issue and new tires after purchase, could run in the $2k to $3k range.

Parts and getting good labor, if your not handy, do not come cheap with car.

Then the optimist in me says "you only pass this way once", and if the Seller is local and you got good karma with the situation, put a value on that, and go for it.

Oh, I would have a Xfire or MB mechanic check it out before purchase, check for oil in the splash pan, or fluid around the transmission, common issues, but usually not show stoppers...

It's up to you. If you feel it's worth it go for it. If it were me and I could get it for 5k I'd jump on it. I was just look'n at 2004 coupe that has been wrecked in the front end that they are ask'n $5700 for. In fact if you decide to pass I'd be interested in look'n at it.

Just to give you a heads up, I'm looking at that car as well. Not for a daily driver but rather to build a race car out of. Not trying to scare you away from it but if you're looking for a cheap thrill and not have any extra expenses after the purchase, this car probably isn't your ticket. They are fun cars but they are not cheap to fix or maintain and 172k is starting to get to that point where you might be fine for another 20k miles or you might have part after part break or go bad right away. They're not Porsche expensive but they are a Mercedes under the fancier sheet metal so expect to pay a premium for parts and service. If I weren't looking for something to pull the motor out of and stuff in a big AMG engine, I'd try to find one with fewer miles and I would recommend the same to you. Good luck with your offer and if you do buy the car, you'll love it along with all the people here on the forum. We're all one big family and the camaraderie amongst members is second to none.

Take care

I second Rudy's comment. There are a few '04's out there with a LOT less miles for a bit more ($9-10K range). I think you'd probably be happier going that route and would get much more enjoyment out of the car.
