Default Is it my fan?

Well, picked the car up last week from the harbor and drove it 300miles home over the autobahn.

I got stuck in a traffic jam and after some time standing still the temperature started sky rocking towards the red zone. In order to prevent it from overheating I put the heater on max and the temperature went back down to normal. I had to keep the heater on all the time whilst not moving in order to prevent the car from overheating ( not the most pleasant experience to be honest) . As soon as I drove, the temperature went back down to normal and I could turn the heater off.

Outside temp. was around 75°F. When I drive it now in city traffic the temperature does not rise at all.....

Did my fan go bad? I can still turn it with my hand and there are no codes. Is there a way to re-produce the circumstances in which the fan normally has to come on? Like having the a/c on its maximum setting whilst standing still?

Does this sound like the typical fan failure??

Thanks!

just start the car, let it warm up, until the fan kicks on. If it never kicks on, it will soon let the temps rise. You will know whether it is working or not. I take it you checked your coolant levels. I am sure there is a temp sensor that would need to looked at as well. Never having that problem, I haven't had any reason to read up on it...but the fan is controlled by a temp sensor, and a module that gives the command to turn on. I will let those who have done the fan mods, and the H/E mods chime in...

Thanks doc! All coolant levels are fine. I'll go check it out tomorrow as soon as I have time and see if the fan comes on at all.

There was a fan recall on this car... Look for it. I think it was an electronic piece.

If you turn your A/C on, the fan runs at slow speed. If you turn your A/C on and the fan does not run, you have a bad fan motor or fan controller. From what I've heard, fan controllers almost never fail, fan motors OFTEN fail.

Do as the linky says, that is hot wire the fan for a second or so, if thats OK then its probably the controller. Used controllers start at $50 and new fans at $100 on ebay.

Thanks for all the info so far guys.

I let it warm up and then put the a/c on whilst idling and standing still with outside temp of 66.

Opened the hood and the fan was on spinning pretty fast the way it should.....Temp. did not move a bit! I guess its a mad sensor then...I'll have to go check what happens in warm weather (75 or higher)
