Default Home Made Cupholder Replacement Bin

For all of us who experienced issues with the flip up cup holders, I came up with a cheap, great replacement option without having to disassemble the entire console to remove the existing one. The finished modification makes a great place for your wallet, cell phone of Blackberry/I-phone. I carefully utilized a screwdriver and some needle noze pliers to virtually rip the entire cup holder mechanism out of the console through the top. Take care not to scratch up the silver trim around the opening. Placing a masking of duct tape around the top of the opening will help a lot with protecting the silver plastic trim during this modification. Grip, pry and twist the parts with the pliers and screwdrivers until they snap and start coming out in pieces. Once you have all the parts and working mechanism removed then the next step is to create a lining in the pocket that exists where the cup holder unit was removed. I purchased some wide strips of black velcro materials. Using only the fuzzy smooth part of the velcro hook and loop fastener strips, I removed the adhesive backing from the velco and lined the inside of the cup holder pocket. Lining the bottom first. You can wrap the strips horizontally around the inside of the pocket or cut pieces to go on each of the four sides. Fit and trim the velcro to size prior to removing the adhesive backing. Trim the velcro so that it will be flush just under the top of the console trim. For less than $10 , a new fuzzy lined bin.

It's pretty self-explanatory, IMO.

I've made my own as well.
I cut up some dvd covers and reused one part of the cupholder assembly.
Pictures attached.

I don't know how to say this without sounding like an *** but you could have removed the cupholder, sold it on the forum for around $80, bought the actual storage bin for around $30 shipped and pocketed the $50.
But whatever floats your boat I guess.

The op sure could have. I took mines apart the right way and I can always change it back with no sticky residue.

May I ask where? I haven't seen one for under $46 + shipping. Still cheaper than they used to be ($63)

It sounds like there was some enjoyment in how he removed the cupholder:

Maybe everyone who has had trouble with it over the years should employ this removal method as a form of catharsis...

If you wanted to remove the gear shift **** and disassemble the complete console, put it all back together and not damage or break anything else, and take about 4 hours to do this then yes, you could have done that. My time is worth more than that plus the aggravation factor.

If it takes you 4 hrs, then you are best to rip it out as you did. I have changed over 3 to the bins and the last one took about 20 minutes. And nothing broke.

How did you do it so quickly? I really want the bin but I am afraid to break something.

If someone has a functional working one, let me know. I use mine all the time, but the mechanism broke and its up all the time, I don't need another place to put my wallet or phone.
