Default tires and pricing option

So, I recently posted about getting new tires for my XF. Price on Hankooks from tirerack was $600 (roughly). That price did not include shipping, installation, etc.

Price from Discount Tire for the same 4 tires was $778.45 online...includes installation, stems, tax, etc.. I spoke with a rep on the phone, and when they added tire pressure sensors, etc. the price went up to $810.00. When I went in to the store today, they added “certificates” which will allow for free replacement if needed, but the price goes up ANOTHER $100 to 900.93. I understand this is still a good price for tires on this car, but when the total keeps going up like this, I get a little frustrated.

What do you guys think about the whole “certificate” thing. Is it worth it? Extra hundred dollars for all 4 for replacement of non-repairable or defective tires. This lasts for 3 years of tire life or tire wear down to 3/32 tread remaining. If tire can be repaired, it will be done free of charge.

Your input is appreciated.

I owned 3 tire/ repair shops for 10 years and LOVED when customers would buy the "road hazard" warranty. NOT a good deal at all!!!!! Major profit center for me. That 100 bucks will buy ONE tire and if you read the fine print you will still have to pay for mount and balance. Skip the "certificate” thing---This comes from an insider that made a mint off these things!!!! If you want "peace of mind", open up a savings account at the bank and put a $100 in it---if you have trouble the money is there!!! GREAT choice on the tires BTW! Jimmy

I have bought tires from TireRack in the past with great customer service. Even with shipping, the price was better than I could find locally on the tires I wanted. Find an independent business that has the equipment to change your tires over and ask about price. Also TR has contracted service facilities to do the work for you at an agreed price.

Jimmy: Thanks for the insider information. I feel the same way about extended warranties, etc. Major money-makers for the business. They are really trying to sell “peace of mind” to the consumer; I get that, but I also get that MOST of these warranties go unused and is pure profit for the business.

Thanks again for your thoughts; I am in agreement with you on this.

Another thing, if there were a “defect” on the tire, wouldn’t the manufacturer honor some sort of guarantee? WHy pay again for this agreement?

Correct on the defect---You will know quickly if you have a bad tire---well, 999 out of a 1000 times. The tire will come with a warranty from the manufacturer just NOT for damage! Like anything else check them out after you get them on the car---Good luck!!!

I've had Achilles ATR Sports on the front on my 07 for 23,000 miles now....love em, look like I'll get over 40,000 miles out of them. From Onlinetires.com you can get;

225 40 18 ATR Sport 92W (speed rated 168 mph) UTQG rating 400 AAA = $72.80 each

265 30 19 " " 93W " " " " " " " = $103.54 each

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+ $352.68 + Shipping

for about $25 more.....you can make those rears 275s.

These are All-Season tires. Handle just fine!

OK, just got back from having my Hankooks installed. WOW...... I’m soooooo impressed. I was under the impression that the noise level in the car was just one of those things I would have to live with. It was loud, but hearing from other people about road noise, I just thought that was the way it was going to be.
Man, was I wrong....with these new Hankooks on, there is no noise at all!! The ride is so quiet, and I LOVE the car more than ever now.
Again, Discount Tire....Hankook Evolution out the door for $810....I did NOT take the Certificates which would have added another hundred dollars to the price.

Thanks for everyone’s input on this topic.

For smooth, quiet performance --- at a bargain price --- you really can't beat the V12's.

The only other tire that competes according to the surveys (smooth, quiet performance) would be the Continental Extreme Contact DW's, but for several hundred dollars more. Personally, cost aside, I prefer the Hankook tread pattern.

I'm up for new rubber myself, so going with the V12's is a no-brainer. Where do I sign?

BTW: The ideal and largest size tires for the XF are 235/40R18 and 275/35R19.

Wasn't able to locate these tires on the website you referenced. Website states that tires are not available for XFire. But I found this tire at another web seller. Customer feedback was very positive, tire tread looks really good & is rated UHP All-Season, and the pricing was very reasonable. Looks like a very viable possibility when time comes for me to replace the OEM Conti's.

Thanks,

Very happy with the v12s here. Has the ps2 before, biggest difference is in the wet. Ps2s felt basically the same as dry but v12 tend to hydroplane quite easily. Otherwise road noise etc. On par with the ps2s. Non track use anyway.

Thanks,

They are there....I just looked......keep in mind ....don't search by vehicle.....look specifically for ;

225 40 18s =Achilles ATRs= $72.80
265 30 19s = = $103.54 275s are about +$10

They don't make them in a (XF OEM) 255/35......but 265 / 30 or 275 /30 works just fine!!
