Default Quick Oil Filter Questions

The o-ring that fits between the oil filter canister and the cap on top is herniating, leaking oil, and making my drive belt come off.
Could someone PLEASE take a minute to look under their hood and tell me:

1. Is the o-ring visible above the metal oil filter canister on your engine or do the metal and the plastic of the cap touch?

2. I don't have a torque wrench, so where are the arrows pointing (in clock positions) that are on the top of the plastic cap?

Thanks much in advance!

1.No,"O" ring is not visible, Cap and housing do touch.

2. Tighten hand tight, then tighten about 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn.

Make sure you have the filter seated on the shaft and the "O" ring in the correct groove. Do a search for oil filter, oil change, or oil filter "O" rings in the online service manual.
I don't know where you are located but I'm sure another member lives not to far away that would be glad to help you. A forum member helped me the first time.

The last person that put your filter in, placed the oring improperly. Common problem I am seeing. I would suggest to replace the oring in question. However, you may be able to reuse it to get by until you get a new one, provided it did not tear it. See the red circle in the diagram below. Also be sure to lubricate the new installed oring with oring lube or clean engine oil.

Thanks everyone for your assistance. My cap o-ring is in the correct position, but is still leaking, so I will replace it and see if that corrects the problem.

dtinker, Do you have any pictures of your Black Mesh powder coated Grills? I always thought mesh would look good on the front of the XF.

Your cap may have a crack in it, but it could be the "O" ring too. I have heard that sometimes they will run for up to 1000 miles and then start leaking, so always check it. Most of the time they never leak, but something is not right. Make sure the filter is seated correctly ( see the two lines, one will disappear under the edge of the cap). Send me a PM with your e-mail address and I will forward some pics of the grill. I bought it from SRT6 on the forum. He can send you a bunch of pics either in Black, While or Chrome.
