Default Coolant loss due to idiot previous owner... LOL

I kept losing coolant and when I looked at the recovery tank I saw a gooped up mess. Ordered a new recovery tank and just installed. Thought I would show the mess they made because the plastic nipple broke for the small hose on top coming from radiator. Total cost for me $52.46 and time. I am lucky this started at home and not while I was on the highway. I have owned the car for 5 mos(?) and have clocked about 5500 miles in that time. I'm still grinning

My coolant nipple broke also. Drilled the hole out, threaded it and screwed a fitting into it.
Works like a champ!

Reread original post.. I bought a new coolant recovery tank to replace the rigged up mess... The pics showed what had been done by the previous owner.

And tighed1 modified the broken tank to accept a 1/4" NPT barb fitting (I think).

I wasnt aware that this was a fairly common problem. Mine was cracked and leaking and rather than put in a new tank I drilled the brass sleeve out and screwed/drove a 1/4 inch brass hose barb in the hole. This was a couple of years ago and not a drop of coolant has leaked out.

Btw, where did you order your cooant tank from. The cheapest Ive seen was about a $150

I found the tank on Skyland Auto Group | New Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Mazda, Mitsubishi dealership in Asheville, NC 28806 I searched under Chrysler and the part was 80+, then I searched under Mercedes and only used the part number on the tank itself 1705000349 I must correct my price... It was $57.24. There is a lot of Scotch in me an I don't mean Dewars.... LOL I've worked to hard to waste my money.

How do you get the tank out of the car? I have an srt-6 and have taken off the two nuts that hold the tank to the mounting studs. That allows me to shake, pull and pry on the tank but it will not come loose/out. Iit seems too set on a pedestal (that is part of the tan)k and that pedestal seems to go thru a rubber grommet and then thru a hole in a metal painted bracket welded to the car. I was afraid to shake or pry harder because I did not want to break the tank. How do you get the tank out? Thanks

All you have said is correct. Over time, the nipple from the tank gets stuck in the grommet that is mounted in the metal bracket, best thing to do is take a large screwdriver or pry tool and just pop it out. First time I removed mine, the grommet came out of the bracket before the nipple came loose. I used some silicone grease when I reassembled, and it popped right back in with no problem.

I sprayed WD40 around the spigot that goes into the grommet and it popped out easy.

I was lucky in the fact that mine came right out with a good tug. However in putting it back in place my left hand slid off and scraped knuckles. Dad used to say you didn't do the job right if you didn't scrap at least on knuckle
