help ID alternator manufacturer
I have a noisy bearing in my 2004 Crossfire alternator.
Is there an easy way to ID the alternator manufacturer (Bosch vs. Valeo) without removing it so I can order one and replace it whe I have the parts in hand?

Good luck on finding any bearing info though, I've never heard of anyone replace a bearing in an alternator. Sourcing it may be a huge problem. Removing/replacing it may be harder. Good luck!

I have come to the conclusion that the mounting of the two may be different somehow. I am not sure how though, I will research this further.

Rock Auto has the Remy# 94119 listed for Bosch replacement on the Crossfire but doesn't say anything about the Valeo in that particular listing. I thought that they were not interchangeable because all the re-man items list them by maker, as if you need to find out which one you have and replace it with the same brand.
BUT I just looked up 2004 SLK320 they list the Remy 94119 for Bosch & Valeo both!
What is all comes down to is: can I order a Remy 94119 and have it fit no matter which one is on my car right now?

I finally changed the alternator.
The brand new (ex-Delco) Remy alternator P/N 94119 ($200 from Rock Auto) fit almost perfectly, the only hitch was very minor. The plastic cap on the battery wire attaching nut not does not fit. The big weird shaped end on the battery wire fit the new item just fine even though the back of it (regulator housing) looks a little different. It is made in China but everything visible seems OEM quality. The Remy box brags that they supply these things to the car manufacturesrs themselves, so maybe it is at least American car OEM quality. Time will tell if it was a better choice than re-built.
I also changed the belt, tensioner and idler. After much thought I bought Dayco parts listed at Rock Auto. The Idler is made in Germany (bearing had the same markings as the M-B marked item I took off) and the Korean made tensioner seems well made and has a metal pulley. The belt was made in America!

My SRT's alternator has literally just died today! Grrrr, copper coils inside aren't turning when the car is running so I'm guessing a bearing has gone inside or sommat, stupid thing! I've noted now the part numbers you guys have supplied but does anyone know the mb oem part number? Coz thankfully my girlfriends brother works for mb

There are two slightly different alternators used on these cars, so the correct part has to be selected. The difference seems to lie in the plug that attaches to the back somehow.
The parts are Valeo and Bosch, according to this post the wiring can be altered to suit your car.
How do you know it's an alternator problem?

Oh right well that's embarrassing, just shows my knowledge of car engineering is rubbish. But the part number of the oem alternator would b a great help. Ok thanks was just typing as you edited. Cheers I'll have a browse.
Any discount you get may be not enough to make it more worthwhile to get a Valeo or Bosch part from someplace else.
Omg! I just don't understand how they can justify charging that much for a part which costs 1/4 of the price they are charging. I think I'm going to go with the Bosch, I'll probably get a reman one too which will save me plenty. I've been trying to find some in the uk to cut out shipping costs but didn't have any luck. Thanks for the pricing though, it will make me feel really good paying just a fraction what mb are charging.

From my research this is what the alternators look like.
Valeo
Chrysler part#5135465AA (part shown is for the SRT6, with the 8 rib pulley)
According to the parts list SRT6's only came with the Valeo alternator. (This is probably wrong[?])
Bosch
Chrysler part # 5097756AA
NA's came with Valeo or Bosch alternators according to the parts list.
My SRT6 has the Valeo.
The Bosch picture does not show too much and is probably upside down to the one in the car. But the casting shapes of the bodies are quite different. The Bosch site mentions the Chrysler part 5097756AA.
The Valeo has slots in the rear plastic cover going length wise.
The Valeo pics are from all different angles, but upside down to the way it is in the car I think.
The attachment of the wires to each alternator is slightly different so it may be simpler to get the correct replacement to match the cars hard wiring.

Maybe that's why so many Crossfires have less than 10,000 miles on them.
Ok, sillyness aside, unless there is something physically wrong with the alternator, there is no need to replace it if it passes the following test:
1) Measure the battery voltage - should be 12 to 12.8 volts.
2) Start the car - measure the battery voltage again - should have risen to over 13 volts.
3) Have someone rev the engine to 2000 to 2500 rpm and hold it there - measure the battery voltage - should be close to or just over 14 volts, even with lights, heater fan and other stuff running.
If you see these rises, the alternator is charging just fine. If not, it still may not be the alternator, check all connections at the alternator, starter, battery and don't forget the battery ground cable where it is bolted to the chassis just ahead of the battery itself.
