Default Car dies while driving issue

I know this is a common issue and posted regularly, but I've been going through this since I bought the car 8 months ago. The crank position sensor was the first thought, thanks to the advice I received here on this forum. However, I've replaced the crank position sensor more than 4 times and it still dies on me while driving. This last time I waited for the car to restart was 3 1/2 hrs later. I went ahead and sent it to the shop and they can't figure it out also. When it's dead I try to start it, there is no clicking or any sound coming from the engine other than the fan starts on. Not sure what to look into, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

When it dies and will still crank-spin but not fire.. you look to the CPS. When it dies and dash lights come on but won't crank-spin.. then you look to the RCM.. click the link in my signature.

Sounds like you at least have 4 good CPS. Hope bosch is your brand of choice..

Thanks for the quick reply, what is RMS and is it easily accessible? Yes, the car dies all the dash light come and it won't crank-spin when I turn the key. Bosch is the only one and I will keep the extra CPS. I will let you know what the outcome is, THX so much for the advice.

Sorry for the delay Mr. Miata, but my shop is still having issues with it. I referred them to this forum so they can get some information on what's going on with the car. I will keep you inform with the progress with the car. Thank you so much again.

Thanks for the update.. we always like to hear "it's fixed" in these stories.. Have they already checked out the RCM solder joints?

I'm new to the forum also but I may have some insight here. Years ago my Datsun 260Z was having a similar problem. It would be running fine and then it would die unexpectedly. After about 5-10 minutes it would start up and run fine again until next time. It drove me crazy. Turned out it was the fuel filter. I had gotten a dirty load of fuel and the dirt had gotten sucked up against the cartridge filter and starved the fuel to the engine. After the few minute wait the dirt dropped off the filter and the flow was unrestricted again. Started right up. Hope this helps.

My wife's '04 was doing the same thing & it finally turned out to be the cam position sensor connector. One of the pins on the connector wasn't seated properly & pushed itself out after that sensor had been replaced earlier. After reseating the pin she hasn't had an issue since.

If possible get the codes read, as the symptoms can get confusing at times.
The car is better at diagnosing itself than a forum member miles away is.

As Joe Friday always said “The facts ma'amjust the facts.”

Mrmiata the update you have been waiting for, I suggested my dealer about the module board which they HAVE replaced and $760+ and 3 weeks without my car. They gave me the old board back; I have been driving the car for only a couple of days, and it has not died on me yet. Thanks for your advice and I will give you more updates as time and drive go by. THXS MRMIATA!!!!

I hate to rain on your parade but if it was the RCM and you had followed MrM's advice the cost could have been nothing or just a few bucks at an electronics shop for re soldering some bad joints.
The RCM that they sold you for $300 or so probably has the same problem. Get the old RCM re soldered as you may need it.

Someone could have re soldered it in ten minutes and you'd have been on your way.

This is why we don't go to dealers unless there is no other option (or the repair is under the powertrain warranty).

Mr. rain on my parade, the module board was only $159 from Mercedes Benz, the price I listed before was for the cost of different sensors they had replaced because of their diagnostic computer reading the error plus an oil change and the labor for diagnosing problems. If I would of told them about the module board before all that work I would of just done the work myself at a cost of less than $120 just for the soldering supplies. I do know what you mean though, if I do have any other problems in the future this is where I'm coming to 1st. Thx yah guys out there. Bless you all.
