Ok, searched the forum and could not find anything related to this code that I pulled after the check engine light came on. I have a 2004 XF with 80,000 miles.
It's a leak in the evap system. The most common reason for that code is a loose or leaking gas cap.
I don't disagree with Toolman often, but I think I do this time.
A detected "gross leak" (loose fuel cap or broken hose from tank to filler) is the P0455.
The P0444 is a purge solenoid error code. I suppose a large leak could set this one, but I really think it's related to the purge valve.
I'd take Toolmans' advice but be prepared that, if it comes back or won't correct, there is something deeper involved.
In any event, once you get it resolved, would you do us a favor and come back and tell us what it was?

Thanks Toolman and pizzaguy and if it was the purge valve is that easy to replace? Location I would assume is in the engine bay? I did order a gas cap and yes will inform the forum if that did or did not fix the issue.

I was doing burn outs and messing around last Friday and on a hard launch my car threw a P0444 check engine code.
i reset code and drove around neighborhood without code coming back.
Has anyone experienced this?

OK, changed the gas cap and decided to look for the purge valve as indicated in the diagram and noticed that the hose connected to the purge valve has cracks in it and that may be causing some of the problems. See attached pic of the hose. Has anyone changed these? The purge valve and cracked hose
Ok, got the purge valve solenoid hose from Rob at NeedsWing and now have run into a problem had to cut the hose since could not get the clic clamp off now it is stuck on the tubing at the bottom. Has anyone taken one off? See the attached pic.
how to I get the lower clic clamp off
any problems with driving without this hose attached to the solenoid?

Folks an update, was able to get the bottom part of the hose off with a long extended reach needle nose pliers. The clic clamp that was attached from the factory was put on it in such a way that it was too close to the ac line, seems it also had some type of glue on the rubber itself that sealed itself to the metal tubing. Once that was resolved put on the new hose and used two zip ties at the bottom took it out for a couple of miles (15) at varying speeds and so far no check engine light. So what was changed was the purge valve solenoid, hose from NeedsWings, new gas cap. In case any one is interested the hose has the following stamped on it MB A 170 476 51 26 V Q2 and measures point 32 inches (8mm) ID (inside diameter) and .55 inches (14mm) OD (outside diameter).

Reason: correct spelling of Needs Wings
