Question Cabin / HEPA filter

I recently did my 14,xxx oil change and on the list for me to replace was the cabin air filter. My local dealership wants $40+ for one of these things. For some reason that seems a little steep. If it was $20 like the oil filter, I probably wouldn't be asking. Is that the going rate or are their places where I can order one for less?

There are tons of these on sale on Ebay for $20 or less. Search under Mercedes Cabin Air Filters. The Crossfire filter is exactly the same as the Old SLK (R170). Call up a Mercedes Dealer and get the part number, since there are different versions depending on the car.

I looked at my cabin air filter at 13,000 miles--perfectly clean, so won't replace it for a long while yet.

I replaced mine at about 21K. It did need it! Regarding access, do a search on this site. I used someone's detailed description to change mine.

Seeing that I live right outside of Detroit, I bet the filter will need to be changed when service "B" shows up. I think it has more to do with living outside of ANY metro area, not just Detroit. So that would explain why the above guy who lives near the coast of Oregon doesn't need it changed at 13K and the guy who lives in St. Louis needed his changed at 21K.

I'm in a dusty area and have 24k miles on my car. I checked the filter and changed it even tho it looked like it could go another 12k miles. I keep the A/C and heater on recycle 98% of the time and that could be the reason it wasn't all that dirty. Price was $48.50 plus $27.50 for the dealer to change it. Did it myself and saved a few $$$. It was a little tricky but it will be easier after you do it the first time.

Ben47, why do you keep it on recycle that much? Do you live some place that smells really bad? You'll have a lot less problems with window fogging you let some more fresh air in.

1. It's dusty and hot 7-8 months a year here.
2. No real humidity/dew point here to speak of, so don't have to worry about anything fogging/freezing up.
3.The car stays much cooler in recycle mode.

I'd have to look in the owners manual for the exact number, but the easy answer is, that above a certain temperature it stays in recycle mode.
