Hey guys. I was checking/adjusting the pressure of my tires this morning. When I was done, I started the car to let the TPMS see that they were all within parameters (my rims are slowly deteriorating & the tires are losing pressure. After I started her up, the spoiler came up. I pushed the button to lower it and restarted the car without any change. I confirmed that no problem lights were lit and gave up for now. Any thoughts?

 

Could be a weak battery.

Before you go buy a new battery, check the terminals and the connection to ground, clean as needed. Might save you some $ if all you have to do is clean all those contact points. Good luck!

I put it on the trickle charger to see if that helped… 😉

 

If it is a bad battery, no amount of charging will last.

 

Yeah, if the battery is sulfated, you might be able to temporarily extend its life (depending on how bad it is) by using a good quality de-sulfating battery conditioner. The problem with that is the good ones are expensive and again, it is only a temporary fix. One tidbit of information copied from an article: Battery Desulfators - Fact or Fiction (motortrend.com) . It is hit or miss on the quality of the device you purchase. The information on that link is 11 years old BUT wet cells have been around for at least a century.

These cars seem to eat batteries. If you've cleaned all connections and grounds and no sign of corrosion left (even up into the battery terminal wires where corrosion can creep up into under the wire insulation) and still have problems... And if you don't have a top quality battery in it that is less than 3 years old it is time to replace it with one of quality. No, they aren't cheap... Yes, they are worth the $ in this car.

There are threads about recommended batteries for this car on the forum. I and several others seemed to have settled on the Diehard AGM Platinum. At around $240 without core charge (that you get back) it's not cheap but it lasts and it works. While you are there buying a quality battery that will last, buy a <$10 quick disconnect you can attach to the terminal so if you know you going to let the car sit for more than 2 weeks you can pop the hood and with one quick twist you can disconnect the battery. Personally, I disconnect mine if I know it will be sitting for more than 1 week which may be overkill but that's just me. I'd never let this car sit for 2 weeks without disconnecting the battery. If I did let it sit that long, yes, it would probably start but every time you let a battery discharge more and more it never comes back to it's full potential regardless of how much charging you give it.

There are people who let these cars sit all winter in their garage their batteries hooked up and they go to start them in the spring, battery is dead, break out the battery charger and hook that up, put a charge in it and it will start and then they drive it around and wonder why they park it again and keep having these weird problems... Their battery is destroyed due to a deep discharge it will never recover from.

 

I need to check my battery, I haven’t done more than charge & refresh it since we bought the car out of Tx. The quick disconnect is a great idea, I’ll definitely be investing in that.
