BTW, Rooms might be tough at this late date during the Color Change Peak, but you can always stay one or two hours away on you way here & come in early AM?
(Just a thought.)

Hopefully i'll have the double din in dash navi system in by then!!!
If we want to "run" the Dragon this fall we need to avoid hunting season (dogs, trucks, and deer do not mix well with high speed assaults) and also need to go after the peak of fall color as there is much congestion.
The THP got 60K and they have 6 to 10 officers up there each weekend, most think it will die down after Labor Day but who knows.
There are plenty of other roads, NC 28 "The Hellbender" is very good and with a posted speed limit of 55 you can get after it a bit more. There is also the Devil's Triangle north of Knoxville, the Cherohala Skyway, and many more.
Also need to keep in mind that is will be tough to find rooms in Knoxville any weekend of a UT home football game, might be better off staying on the NC side.
Of course I'm in.

30 Mph... that's not much... at that speed limit the most you will probably increase to is barely above double after that it is already getting rather risky...
I haven't been to either places, but I say Hellbender with the 55 mph would be a better choice...
The location with the least police and traffic is my choice I don't know where that is though...

Well, count me in if I'm not traveling on business and arrangements can be made for overnights and stuff since I'm at least a day away.
As for the concerns about the "crack down", I'd suggest that we make the event very public and perhaps have someone from who has some press credentials with us or call the local TV station.
This seems like something that the press would be hungry for.

I am in!! I live in Charlotte, NC. I grew up in Chattanooga, Tn and know the TN/NC border area well, trout fishing in the Hiawassee, and Tellico rivers. I still have relatives in Murphy. My fraternal grandmother was a Shields. Cades Cove makes a nice side trip.
Just let me know when! I already have the week of the 15th off of work and no plans for the vacation yet... Wouldn't mind taking a longer vacation if y'all set the date later.
I was just looking for this area on a map of western Nc and eastern Tn.
Noticed that not only is there US129, but using US74 on the SE end of
the Dragon, you can go north a short ways and pick up 28 to come back
to the Dragon on the NW end. 28, it self, looks to be nearly as twisty
as is US129. In fact, this seems to make a rather nice loop that could be
traveled rally style for time. That is, if I'm looking at the right section of
US129.

I'm going on a 17 Day Venice to Ft Laud Oct 8th to the 25th & then staying in So Fla till 10/31 this year, so it looks like it will be Early Nov this year, either 3rd & 4th or 10th & 11th (USMC BD & Veterans' Day), or you can all do one while I'm gone in Oct. & I'll pick it up next year? Early November can still be really nice here, or it can be cold, no telling?
(& I'm a former WeatherMan). Is that too late for most of you?
(We shouldn't have so many Motorcycles to Deal with them or THP's).
