Importing a Crossfire to Canada
I am on a motorcycle forum and there is a comment from a rider in Ontario on importing he never stops at the US border and so far no Canadian officials have caused him any problems-----odd
as to the comment about he bumper shocks, how would anyone know if they had been changed, the requirement for a statement/bill from the installer seems to be vague and todate no one has asked me for my invoice
I have a feeling this is just a money grab and who at Canadian Tire is up on Gov't regulations most can't speak English correctly

Strange things indeed. When you go to the Cdn side they are supposed to check the title to ensure it has been stamped by the US border.
The bumper mods are stated on the form from RIV and the repair statement was photo copied as proof that the work was done.
The guys at Cdn Tire where quite familiar with all of this.

My apologies as Form2 from the RIV does have a line about bumpers. I just paid no attention as my form got signed off.The line states:
"This vehicle may require modifications to the existing bumper system.
Information regarding modifications MUST be supplied by the manufacturer.
Documentation on the manufacturer's letterhead, and a copy of work order
must be provided to the inspection centre in order to pass inspection."
That's it word for word.
Mine is checked off by Canadian Tire.
The way I read that statment is CT cannot do the work, only inspect and as 5mph is the same as 8 kmh, I'm still not sure why some are being hit with this, but if they are, I suppose it has to be done at a dealer or they're just being ripped off.
That's all the info I've got on the matter.

In my long winded intro, I mentioned that I phone RIV about the double ** beside the Crossfire on the import list and the guy on the phone could NOT relate to 5 mph being the same as 8kmh so I phoned a local CT who confirmed that they were the same spec and no bumper mods were needed. I should mention that the guy I talked to at CT was a former Crossfire driver/ Chrysler employee.
Then, when I went for my RIV inspection, I actually went to a different CT, had the headlight DRL changed, emissions and safety and they signed off on everything including the bumpers. I've been plated for a week.

First the warranty will be void completely, and I also need to change the bumpers foam under them... +/- $600, just to comply with Canada specifications. That is probably just a way to protect their market.
Is there other people in the same situation?
Please could you post your experiences.
Thanks,

I've left a number of postings on importing. just click on my id. I had no problems.
As to bumpers, Canada adopted the U.S standards last week, it's on the RIV site though I had no issue with that either. Any U.S. dealer will honour the warranty as long as you pay the fee to transfer it to your name, regardless of where you live.
CT cannot do the bumpers, only a Dealer could under the old rules but now it's not necessary anyway.
Hope this helps.
Purchased my Pearlcoat Red in California, July 2008, NO MORE BUMPER PROBLEMS. July 15, 08 Canada amended the law on all bumpers if they comply with USA and Europe standerds.
Importing is very easy just go to RIV.ca and read all about it. We are now a 3 car US importer, Big savings are on Luxury Vehicals. Saved 11,000 Canadian on my 05, it had only 15M miles. Found it on cars.com
Follow the rules and you will have no problem. Every State in USA has it's own rules for out of state sales. California says to not pay state tax it must be either taken out by dealer or Car Carrier and dealer must have proof for their protection.
Additional info.
Make sure that you have the dealer in USA to get any work done by them prior to purchase as it is still under warrantee with them. Once it crosses the border you are out of luck with Chrysler.
Canadian Tire does the Daytime running lights with modual and installation for 100.00
On Line you can get from Chrysler USA the NO RECALL NOTICE for the VIN # make sure all that work is done on the car if needed by them as it is also covered at No Charge by Chrysler. NOTE some States mandate the Daytime lights so check the VIN.

I found an 06 Crossfire Roadster on Ebay, last Tues, bid on it and won. $19000 for a car with 7000 miles on it. . The car is for my 66 year old father. We flew down to Kansas City MO. on Friday, and drove the car back to the border. The car is sitting in storage in Buffalo until Thursday. I have imported several GM vehicles before, and thought I knew everything! Well I was wrong, the warranty issue was new to me. This car has a few warranty issues that I would like to have taken care of before I bring it home. Could anyone please give me the name of the dealer in the Buffalo area and maybe a name of who to talk too?. I am sure my Dad will gladly pay the 125 dollars to transfer the warranty. Do you suppose he could use his sister's Florida address for it? We haven't got to the RIV part of the process yet, but I hope that the bumpers are not an issue
Thanks
Jeff
Thanks
Jeff
To get recall and stuff done on warrantee it must be registered in USA with USA address. You are lucky it has not crossed the border. Get it to any Chrysler dealer. Good luck Look up Chrysler dealer on Chrysler the state you are in.
Jeff,
The bumpers are not an issue anymore. You are lucky, that cost me $1000. To do the day time headlights is expensive if done through the dealer. They have to replace the entire light module which is around $500. If you want to save money go an aftermarket route.
Good luck,
Brian.

Brian thanks for the great start on the info. But does anyone know a specific dealer in the Buffalo area? I have already read that the headlight switch on an automatic is programmeable . But people seem so worried about doing this conversion to daytime running lights. I recently brought home a 1996 Camaro Convertible from Florida. it too required daytime running lights. The sensor and installation were over 300 bucks. The wire I ran from the ignition to the headlight fuse was about 50 cents, and mimicked the function of daytime running lights exactly. Something to think about and it passed the RIV inspection with flying colours.
