LOUD Wiper Function
It's Fall, and the rains have hit the Northwest. I have hardly used my wipers, and they do a good job, but the noise of the blades clearing the windshield is loud and annoying. Is there a way to tone this down with some sort of application or product? The blades are in good condition, but the noise is worse at a slow speed, around 10 MPH. I did a search, but did not find this an issue...
Thanks for any help you can give me.

I use rain-x and never use my wipers. Works great. To make this product work better try to find some yellow tinted glasses, this will take the glare off the drops on the windshield and allow you to see further in the rain than what you would be able to see using your wipers. (I normally am very sarcastic, this time I'm being that way, I really mean what I am saying).
Golfergal, try using some denatured alcohol to clean the blades. Then use it to wipe down the entire windshield. Sometime simple airborne contaminates accumulate on the surface of the windshield and the blades to create an annoying sound.
Rain-X is also an excellent suggestion.

Windshield appears clean and free of contamination...I am constantly cleaning my windows...but, hey, I'll try again!
I too like rainx but if your blades are hard and or cracked it might not fix it. If after the rainx and cleaning you still have noise buy a new set of wiper blades and spray them with silicone before you install them. This will keep the rubber soft and should work.

However, I will try RainX...and try wiping my blades, as well.

It doesn't sound like he did it right. You put it on like wax and take it off like wax. He either didn't clean your windshield first, put it on to thick, or didn't take it completely off.

Thanks for the info and will just have to check that out myself...

Did the guy that detailed my car do it right? Not sure... but in the end, I replaced my windshield wipers and the noise went away... Old blades?? Probably. It was a $20 fix and I am happy again...
Probably just a simple fix of new blades. I'll see if I can get a set this weekend.

It took me a couple of applications to figure out what to do with the Rain-X. As mentioned above, it is like waxing your car. You apply it and then buff it. I use a good number of paper towels when doing the buffing. Seems the Rain-X is on the towel and just spreads itself with each wiping. IMO, the stuff is awesome and I rarely use the wipers now. A good buffing gets rid of the haze.
I definately use it on the rear window, I've got a coupe and when I first got the car I noticed the water just sat on the rear window and I couldn't see. By applying the Rain-X, the rear window now stays rainfree.
I also use it on the side windows and the mirrors.

I used to use rainx when it first came out in the 70's. Then I heard how with some windshields it was etching the glass. I was told if you used it frequently this was a problem??? Stopped using it. As far as spraying silicone on the blades, I know what it does for rubber but not sure I would want that spread all over my glass. At night it could be a problem. Rubber does dry up and become hard and noisy. I new set of blades will eliminate this.
I use Rain-X and like it.
The trick to getting rid of the filmy haze is to wipe it off really REALLY well. This means re-wiping it two or three times with a fresh, clean towel each time. It's a bit of a pain, but once the haze is gone, you'll love the results.

Sharon,
Did you buy just the rubber refill or the whole piece? I'm a bit confused as to what part I need and/or installation. God knows I could look it up in the manual...but, I'm not too close to my manual at this moment. Thought I'd run down and get a replacement set in the AM.

~ rubber strip can be replaced.
~ remove whole blade from wiper arm (at pivot point).
~ squeeze the two stainless stays and slide off.
~ put stainless stays along the rubber insert and slide back onto blade assembly. trim off excess rubber.
~ slide and replace blade onto wiper arm.
