Default noisy engine -- clicking, tapping

Hi All,

Was wondering if anyone else has experienced issue I have and what the fix was for it. Have 2005 with 16K miles... engine has gotten noiser recently with metallic click/tapping sound. Lifters maybe? Certainly does not sound the way it should. Brought it in to dealership today to check it out.. prelim is failed lifters and they think to replace them all... does that sound about right or have others had a different fix? Was it successful or did the car develop other issues later after the fix? Would I be better off leaving things alone? What was root cause if lifter issue? too much oil, not enough oil or neither?

Thanks
Dave

Welcome to the forum!

I found this link by typing "lifters" into the search bar.

Welcome to the forum!

It could be the EVAP purge solenoid. Look at the diagram, you can put your ear up to it, if it ticks it may not be the lifters.

Here is my take. From the day I bought my car 4 years ago I wondered about the loud noise. When I first got it, someone riding in my car even said "this thing is loud". Sometimes when I turn the car off I can hear a clunk clunk as the engine is winding down to a stop. While running I hear a ticking noise. Sometimes I hear it more when I first start the car. The noise may not be as bad as yours but it can't compare the two.

I brought it in to the dealership and they told me it was normal. 4 years later and 55K miles everything is still great! No engine problems.... I change the oil regularly and I bet I will get another 150K miles out of the engine! But it is still making noise. I work with some engineers and asked them 4 years ago. They purchased new cars that made strange noises and it worried them. They asked the dealership to fix it and said it was normal (just like me). They drove the cars 150K+ miles with no problems and sold the car still running. Years ago my dad bought a brand new 1993 Bronco and that engine made the strangest knocking noise too. He worried and kept bringing it back but never solved the problem. That thing is now rusting and falling apart but the engine is still running great!

Just be carefull when you start having people take things apart like the engine. Some things are just better off left alone. That is just my opinion.

When I was looking to buy #2 and #3, I test drove quite a few XFs. Many of them made a clicking noise after start-up, but it quieted down quickly. That noise is surprising in a German engine, but it seems "normal". I agree -- if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Most dealerships will mess up more than they fix. If it gets worse/louder, then worry. Also, find another XF owner and listen to his engine. It may just be normal noise that is new to you.
