Default Steering stabilizer-what does it do?

Took my 2005 in for an oil change. Get a call saying the "steering stabilizer" is leaking a very small amount and should be replaced? OK, no big deal, let's replace it. I ask how much? He says. for most cars about $50, but I will check and call you back. Calls back and tells me that a steering stabilizer for a Crossfire is $850, plus the labour to install it!! I was thrown back and said what will this do for me.He says not much, you might not even notice the difference because it does not hold that much oil anyway, so you might not even notice any difference.
Give me your opinion, if I really have to do this, I will do it, pay the money and shut up but this really feels like a monumental amount to pay for this part.

Thoughts?

Tommy a couple of things:

1. The Sterring stabilizer helps reduce the pull on the steering wheel as you drive on uneven and grooved roadways.

2. Although yours may be leaking it does not mean that it is junk or gone but it likely is less effective.

3. The dealer is quoting a real price (yes very inflated but real). I just had mine replaced under warranty and they wanted $650 for the part alone. I saw the actual dealer cost and what it was to me and the difference was only $100 bucks.

4. THe most important part, you can save a ton by buying one on amazon (do a search on the site) and if you are even a bit of a wrench it is a two bolt deal and you are back in business.

Trust me after I had mine done (car only has 19k) I noticed a big difference and it too was a leaker.

Hope this helps.

Try it you may like it!

I got mine here for $20 + $9 shipping:

Steering Dampner Mercedes Benz SLK 230 320 32 AMG W170 - JoeTLC

It was all of 15 minutes to change.

Ordered one just now without looking at mine. For the $30.00 it's worth having it on hand........

Thank You very Much,

Here is what I do not understand. Why would Chrysler charge that kind of money for a $30 part? I mean, even at $100 plus labour I am the kind that says.."just do it", but at that kind of money I had to go to the forum and get some opinions, and am I glad I did. I will order the stabilizer and do it myself. Question,do I only need 1 stabilizer or does it take one for each side of the car?

Told you I was stupid

Hello there tomy, the same thing happened to me last month and the only advice that the mechanic tool me is to replaced the whole stabilizer. That was quite expensive but the leaking will still occur if i will not replaced that.

Take the forum's advice, do it yourself if you can. Very Easy

Cheep and very easy for sure. The hardest part is removing the bottom splash shield but an extra pair of hands helps. Seriously, if you can change a tire, fuse, or motor oil; you can do this replacement

If you really aren't into working on your car, still buy the part online for $30. Then go find a reputable independent shop and pay them $30-$50 to install it. A 4x4 shop would be perfect as they install these things all the time. It truly is 2 bolts and 15 minutes of your time, if you have the tools to do it.

I can't believe that the dealership wanted $850 for it though?!? Most of the parts for this car are marked WAY up at the Chrysler dealerships, but this seems excessive even for them. Wow!

Good luck.

I have all of the splash shields listed in the service manual (the big one under the engine bay that needs to be removed to change the oil, and the forward one under the front bumper although mine is a bit beat up) and I didn't need to remove anything to replace the steering stabilizer. It was behind the engine bay splash shield.

The service manual seems to back me up on this - instructions are just "unbolt and bolt the new one in."

If you've got really long arms and are skinny you don't even need to jack up the car, although I'd do it for convenience. Two bolts, a few taps on each end, and you're done - it's a trivial job.
