Default Hood Strut

Opened the hood today to change one of my high beams. Haven't had it open since I last changed the oil about three months back. Lo and behold, hood nearly fell on my head. Strut didn't hold it up at all. Didn't think that it would lose gas that quickly. Was able to keep it open by pushing the button and opening it up 90 degrees. Guess I'll have to get the part and change it out. Just thought that if the strut ever went the hood would sink down slowly. It would have come down with a bang.

It happens, check the major auto retail stores for a new hood strut, around $70 sounds right. Each trunk strut are about $35/each.

I had the same problem about a month ago. I came to this handy dandy forum and found a post from someone else that said:
I got mine from the autohausAZ, part # 9391KY Stabilus-Boge for $64.13 U.S. with free ground shipping
I went out there and ordered this one. It is an exact replacement. The only difference is the original had a MB star/logo and this one had the info scratched off but is was an exact duplicate. I have not installed it yet but everything should match.

Price not bad for an exact duplicate. Hope everything goes well.

It may b irrelevant due to variations in frequency of use, but may I ask what the app. mileage was when this thing "let you down"? The mileage may be similar and a red flag for those yet to experience this "let down" (sorry, I can't stop...)

I would think time is more relevant than distance but as info, I have a 2005 with ~95,000 miles when I noticed the issue.

I an 02SLK and the same happened just went local motorfactors and got one for £50 about ten minutes to change if you've got a long piece of soft wood to support bonnet with just be careful not to loose the small clip which can be flipped off with a small screwdriver
