Default Brake dust

What have you found to be the best brake dust cleaning product ??? I have tried Eagle1 and Simoniz and neither are the "spray and rinse" solution they say they are.

many of us would recommend a solution to solve the brake dust issue... via "rotex gold" kevlar dust-free brake pads. 90% less dust.

they are available thru: http://brakeworld.com/catalog.asp?page_id=items&catid=2 for your srt. go with the rotex.

i now just use soap & water.

~ as for a cleaning product for brake dust... armor all makes a product called ... "wheel cleaner" in a gray bottle... works well imo.

+1 for Rotex Gold brake pads, they are great!
I'd say that's one of the best things I've done to the car besides the Renntech kit.
I used to wipe down my wheels once a day after my 60 highway miles round trip to work and back...now I can go 3-4 days easy!
No special cleaner is needed either, I just use car wash soap once a week when Im washing the car.

Never argue with "Mr. Clean"; he knows everything about these things, even in his sleep ...

Ever wonder just what's in that brake dust? I think I've found the source.

Sorry if this isn't exactly a link (I don't know how to do that yet).

If you want to try a decent set of low dust brake pads there are a few that seem to work well on our SLK's.
The Porterfield R4S pads I have on my SLK 32 were the prototypes for the SLK's, and I've had them on since August of 2001. 25,000 miles multiple track days and three years of autocross and the pads still have plenty of life in them. The initial dust for the first week or two didn't look promising, but that was only until the pads bedded in, once seated they were FAR better then stock.
The other pads that seem to work well were AXXIS MetalMasters. They seem to have more resins in them and they have a strong brake smell to them until they seat and "cook off" but they are excellent pads. I had them on my SLK 230 Kompressor.
Of the two, I think the AXXIS pads are a little cleaner, but the Porterfields are a little better at very high speeds and under VERY heavy braking...

Did you guys need to replace your rotors? Or did you leave stock when upgrading the pads? Thanks.

Ya they suck. And so does wheel cleaner bought on sale at the auto store. Go with Maguire's if you can't afford to go to the rotex golds. Shoot got 3 kids and school clothes time is coming.

Art,
I would recommend that you go with the Rotex Gold pads. Many members have them and swear by them. They're not cheap, but time is money and you'll spend far less time cleaning your wheels if you go with this product. Good luck and enjoy your Crossfire.

I would like to order these...what would the cost (average) be for installation of the pads? I would have to have it done...no tool experience. If anyone had the job done by a service center, what did you pay?

Thanks!

It will take your dealer about an hour to install the front pads and about another hour for the rears. Hopefully your rotors will not have to be turned which takes about another 30 minutes. I had mine installed on both axles (front & rear) cost was about $100.00.

Thanks...is this a "dealer" only job or could I have it done at Shucks or another local brake "joint". I apologize, in advance, for coming off as a total ditz. I am mechanically challenged, and I'm afraid, likely to stay that way.

I had a cartoon image of dollar signs rolling through the service manager's eyes as I read this. I watched Andrew install Rotex Golds on my car, and I would figure the actual time for a service tech to change the rear pads at about 8 minutes per side. If he had a sore thumb, maybe 10 minutes a side. Anyway, Rotex Golds are clearly the way I went, and won't hesitate to recommend them, no matter who provides the labor.

Anyone should be able to do it...do you have any friends with tools and know how?

I did mine myself, front and rear in less then an hour.

~ the cleaning & waxing (inside & out) of mark's rims took longer than the pad swap itself. its the perfectionist in me...

it can never be too clean...

Guys,

For interest, I checked out the Rotex site for the brakes and they did not have a spec listed for the Crossfire (under Chrylser) can someone post the item number for the Rotex Gold Pads for the XFire?
