Default SRT auto shift question

When I try to downshift one gear from d to 4 or 3 the trans shifts down into second and sometimes first. Is this what happens to you too? This is at around 30 or so.

When you shift down once, the trans will shift down one gear from whatever gear it happens to be on in auto. So if you are in 3rd gear when in auto, shifting down once will bring it down to 2nd, and so on.
I hope this helps.

I think FP nailed it. It sounds like you are shifting down as you are slowing to a stop. The trans in the SRT is one of the smoothest autos I have ever driven. It really adapts well to your driving style.

The Z4 2.5 I traded in on my SRT had an autostick. I HAD to shift it manually to get any performance at all. On the track it would only hold a gear for a specified time (like around 20 seconds) then shift up. Not a lot of fun when entering a long sweeper or decreasing radius turn (it would shift up in the middle of the turn)

I haven't experienced this with the SRT. It is fun to shift manually, but it being so good at what it does, I have been keeping both hands on the wheel most of the time.

I used to have nothing but sticks but have to admit having an auto and driving on Los Angeles parking lots, um freeways, makes life easier.

I tap mine once and it drops two or three. That is my question.

"D" is not synonymous with 5th gear. It just means you are in Automatic Mode. When you are downshifting and it goes to 2nd or 3rd gear, it was previously in only 3rd or 4th gear respectively, not 5th as you are misunderstanding it.

I thought that's what I said.

The only problem I have is my '04 autostick did not do this.

The SRT6 autostick is probably tuned different since it has a lot more torque and horsepower. Let the transmission do it's job...

Here's a quote from the Edmunds review of the 2002 SLK 32 AMG, which has basically the same transmission as the SRT6:
"The transmission deserves mention in that not one of us hard-core enthusiasts (who think a real sports car should have a manual gearbox) minded the automatic at all. In fact, we liked it, a lot. Upshifts were lag-free and firm, yet not jolting. And dipping into the throttle brought quick downshifts that meant an instant burst of power was always available. Additionally, the autobox is programmed to downshift when braking, much like a good driver with a manual, so as to afford engine braking before entering a turn and the right gear when powering out of it."
Those differences are typical for the AMG variants, which are indeed tuned differently than the standard models. Why not let the auto do the work itself and see how you like it? And remember - these transmissions are adaptive, so they will learn and adjust to your habits. Good luck.

The reason we have the autostick feature is to manually shift the car when you want. I like to keep it in 3 or 4 so I can hear that great exhaust sound.

When you up or down shift, make sure that you bump it quickly. If you hold it for to long to the left, to down shift, it will down shift to the lowest possible gear that the computer will allow. That could be why your skipping two gears at a time instead of only one gear.

Yeah, these tranny's are strange on the SRT6, I don't know if the stock one's will do this or not since I really didn't drive mine very hard until I installed the Renntech kit. But if I'm in drive and nail it to pass a car and decide to back off it will stay in the lower gear that it changed to until you start playing with the gas pedal.

I noticed this too, just figured it was normal. When driving at 10-20 mph in D in my base coupe it shifts to 4th, but my srt6 shifts to 1st.

That is what I wanted to hear. You would think that with more power it would be the other way around! Thats what threw me off. Thanks for confirmation of this.
