Default Srt Wing Rust

I am having the wing on my daughter's Xfire painted red today. When the wing was removed there was a lot of water under the area where it is bolted onto the trunk lid. It had already started to oxidize and has the beginnings of rusting in the future.

I would recommend everyone remove the wing and coat the area with a rust inhibitor. Just my opinion. It only takes a few minutes to take off the wing and clean the area.

Good call! This car seems prone to rusting. Every winter I jack up the whole car and do a once over... guess I'll have to start removing pieces.

Can you post the removal procedure?

I would imagine that you just have to remove the plastic interior panel on the hatch, and the screws are likely visible behind it.

This will require some caution and/or a panel removal tool to prevent from scarring up the panel or the hatch lid.

Can you get pics of the damage?

Should be under warranty...don't they have a rust warranty?

Very easy. Pop the black plastic pieces out holding the plastic cover under the truck lid, unscrew the screw under the truck release leaving the wire attached. There are 4 bolts holding the wing in place. They come off easily. Have someone hold the wing as you remove the last nut so the wing doesn't fall off and scratch the car.

My daughter's car had a significant amount of water pooling in this area and it was rusty colored. When I soaked up the water the paint underneath was beginning to blister and will/would become a problem in a couple of years if not taken care of now. I think this is a similar problem Andrew/Mr. Clean pointed out under the rubber at the bottom of the doors.

Have fun.

Mine has the same problem. The dealer said the bolts rust because the rubber seal cracks or falls apart. I have been waiting a month now for replacement rubber seals to come in. I have to have the paint retouched because it caused pitting around the bottom of the spoiler.

I would imagine the removal procedure is slightly different on a Coupe. I may try it do it on my Coupe in the near future.

For the coupe there are two pieces to remove...

1. In the handle you close the trunk with there is a small cover... use a thin flat head screw driver to remove it then unscrew the screw.

2. In one corner slowly pry the large plastic piece up (or down since the trunk is open) there are just plastic pull tabs holding it in.

In the pic you only need to remove the piece in the bottom of the picture!

There is a tool you can buy at sears. It might be a hard plastic or metal that is "V" shaped that you use to pop them out.

I saw the painted wing this afternoon. WOW! I bought Blaze Red paint, same as Crossfire red, and it looks great. It has a very deep red maroon look. It may have something to do with the wing originally black. I will take some pictures Tuesday of the before and after look and try to post them by the end of the week. I can't wait to see it back on the Xfire.

I like it so much, I might even do my car. In fact I am truly excited.

Bump -
Spring is coming. Might be a good time to check under your wing for rust issues.

I would think yes. Just maybe not as soon. I will do this when I do the under door gasket sealing. I may use the sealer there too if I think it needs it and I can keep it under the mounts.

Well I just got my car back from the dealer. It took five months for my new spoiler to come in. They told me they had to replace it because it is a one piece unit. It was done at a body shop that painted it and put it on.They did an excellent job,no scratches or broken parts. The parts manager said the whole bottom was rusted inside. While I was there I got new center caps as mine were pitted, also got new drivers side door handle because it was peeling. All service was covered under warranty. Free rental car for three days was great as that was when we got 20 inches of snow. They gave me a new 4 wheel drive ram truck.

Yes. As with the doors, it seems to be able to happen even from washing them.

Are we talking about the fixed srt-6 wings?? or the electronic wing that raises on the standard crossfires??

They are talking about the SRT fixed wing. However the door sill issue happens on ALL crossfires so check that out at least onecs a year. You should have no issues with the NA wing but I would be sure and keep the underneath deck and wing surface clean and waxed.

Mercedes Benz may design the best cars in the world but some of the details are lacking. Their cars are known for rust problems.

I know because I've had several.
