Default Nitrogen in your tires

I put nitrogen in my tires in my '04 coupe and my new SRT6. I was and am very happy with the results. Almost no change in tire pressure over months of driving. Only $16 bucks at big brand tire store.

Dan! What is the advantage of the Nitrogen? Thanks for any answers! I have not heard of this before?

Big Brand says "It doesn't expand with heat like air does and your tires pressure therefore stays more constant! That's what keeps them from pressure loss".

True. Nitrogen is also inert. The only problem with using nitrogen is finding a common source - you want to use either air OR nitrogen - not both.

Nitrogen has nothing to due with maintaining the same pressure over months. What it IS good for is maintaining the same pressure in racing conditions when the tires are really getting hot. Race cars can suffer handling problems which just a pound or two difference. This is why NASCAR uses it. I don't think there is any use for it on the street.

untrue, the reason the tire pressure doesn't change is the fact the tires don't expand as much from nitrogen VS air !

Nitrogen Molecules are also A LOT bigger than Oxygen, so it won't leak out over time. We all know if you don't put air in your tires they will go flat eventually. Nitrogen doesn't.

This is true, I have been using Nitrogen in my tires for about a year now...the real benefit (for me) is that Nitrogen is more temperature stable. That pesky TPMS light does not come on anymore when there is temperature drop.

I can't use it or I would. You see I go to the track frequently and that requires constant pressure adjustments, so Nitrogen just wouldn't be feasible for me. I Guess I could a portable air tank and have a shop fill it with nitrogen, but it would be my luck I run out with one tire to go...

this is a great idea, a spare tank for racers, but BigBrands refills for free after buying the 1st fill up!

I've read a similar thread on another forum where a poster made an interesting point - since the oxygen molecules will leak out much easier than the nitrogen molecules, this will ultimately leave the tires filled with only nitrogen. So you can just put air in your tires and let them sit for a couple of days to get all the benefits of nitrogen without the cost.

That is pretty much what I was trying to say. Nitrogen does not expand and contract with Temperature changes as much as oxygen does so tire pressure remains more constant which is more critical in racing than a street driven car. If you have a leak it will go down with nitrogen. My son races a Bandolero and we fill his tires with nitrogen. Nitrogen has benefits, but not enough in my opinion to use it in my street car. I wouldn't want to have a low tire on my street car and be tempted to hold off getting it aired up until I could find some nitrogen.

nitrogen is lighter than regular old air, but it's no that much of a diff, I mean the air we breath is around 78% nitrogen

Hmmm, 16 bucks for nitrogen or air for free once in a while? Easy answer, uh, FREE!

Uh-oh.....this nitrogen thing again!

I think it's pretty much a wash either way. I can see the benefits........but not for 16 bucks a tire!

Oh ya......if you ever fill up with air again you're basically defeating the purpose, and are supposed to get them re-filled with nitrogen.

...

How about Helium, should reduce your car's weight by a few thousands of a gram! I say with tongue firmly in cheek.

Nitrogen does nothing for performance, I havent had to put air in my tire for about 1 year so regular air is just fine. Does nitrogen weigh less than air? I know if you take a deflated tire and weight it, then fill it up to 35psi with aire you will gain about 2lbs.

I think race teams use the nitrogen because you don't need to haul around a compressor when you have 3000psi tank so you can run air tools with.

I have had Nitrogen in my tires for over a year now an had it put in at the same place as Dan (BigBrand). I was lucky as they didn't charge me since I do a lot of business with them but I have to say that my pressure has been stable for over a year & I haven't had my TPM light come on at all. I check the pressure every couple of fill ups and no change in over a year.

I am running a 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, and 1% Argon mix at the moment, and am very happy with the results.

I am doing the same and so far no problems. And it's real cheap too!

Oh, and I wash the car with pure Di-hydrogen Oxide. Better living through chemistry!
