Default Nailed in the shoulder:

I got a nail puncturing my right rear where the tread meets the sidewall.
I checked with the dealer, and they said with a shoulder puncture the tire could not be repaired.
I went to a tire store, and they said no problem, $10.
They did the patch from the outside.

Will this hold, or do I need a new tire?

I have the Continental All Season tires.

Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem with two of my tires. Neither one is leaking, so I guess I'll just let them be and just drive on them too hard until I can replace them.

IMO...it's a 50/50 thing. I've seen tires with plugs blow out even when the plug was in the middle of the tread. (where they are meant to go).

Depending on how you drive, it could last, or maybe it won't.

I won't EVER own a tire with a plug in it! With my luck...that's just asking for impending doom!

As stated above... it's risky business driving on a tire that's been plugged on the shoulder. Many places won't even do
it for fear of the liability if something should happen. Me... I'd replace the tire.

Your dealer didn't want the liability if the plug didn't hold. I would replace it.

my friend just trashed his 03' cobra from having a plug there, he was shifting from 2nd to 3rd driving hard, tire blew and he went into a fire hydrant... but on a good note he took the insurance money and bought a 750 hp 04' cobra with a procharger... oh yeah their friends at the tire place "did them a favor" patching it since they couldn't get a tire yet... moral of the story no patches outside the patchable area for me.

Thanks for the feedback.
I decided to get a new tire, but it is on national back order.
Could be a couple days or over a month.

Hope it's before the Tail of the Dragon GTG.

I would never risk driving hard or even normal on a tire that has had it's sidewall or shoulder patched. Only the tread area should be patched.

It would be good to 'limp' you somewhere, but not much else in my opinion.

Replace the tire as soon as you possibly can.

As to the tire being on backorder... www.tirerack.com ... they should have it in stock and can ship it to a local installer. I'm betting you could get it in a day or two.

When I first bought my '04 4 years ago I got a nail in the front tire it wasn't on the side wall. I had it plugged and drove those michelins hard for 20,000 miles! Lucky I guess but I think it went in straight and wasn't larger than 1/8 nail.
