Help: Engine/Trans Noise
Hi all,
I have a SRT roadster and wondering f anyone else experinced this, or know what it is.
Vehicle has about 12k miles on it.
Under certain conditions as below:
-Shift from 1st to 2nd
-Downshift from 2nd to 1st
Shifting described above is when trans is in "D," not manual selection. I have been trying my best to isolate this sound to figure out what it is.
Under the mentioned conditions, I sometimes hear a sort of metal grind sound. Best way I can describe is that it sounds like a bearing wearing out, and occurs right at the shirt point for maybe 1/2 a second and goes away. The noise is more prevalent if engine under considerable load.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I had this on another car and it was the belt slipping. As a test try a little belt dressing or replace the belt.
Sound should be coming from the front of the car and not underneth if this is the problem - but it is noticable at the shift point.

70Gt6,
Thanks for the info. I can follow the argument on the belt as a cause since I would imagine if the belt tension is off ever so slightly that I'm hering the noise as inconsistently as I have.
By belt dressing you mean checking the tension on the belt?

It will temporarily stop an old belt from squeeling for a short time, at least long enough to diagnose.
You do have to be careful not to get it on other parts, just the belt.
If you do change out the belt look for the Goodyear Gatorback belt - it seems to run quieter and it supposed to slip less.
Remove the engine cover. Start car and check for any noise coming from the top compressor pulley. You try to turn on AC and see if any noise appears. My SRT is making same sound and I've isolated it to a bad pulley bearing. See my thread on SRT clutch - AC or SC ????
New bearing is $35. New pulley $700. Lower ET's, Costly.

but at 12K miles I would still bet on the belt. Usually closer to 50K for a bearing....but you never know.

That's good to know... somehow I was mislead to think that the 3/36k was powertrain.
I'm debating just taking the car in and let the dealer figure it out.
At this point, the noise is so inconsistent that I think they will end up chasing their own tail though
