Default Ordering a new pump: Johnson or Lightning-which is more reliable

Before I spend the $ on a new pump, is there really a reliability difference between the LET motorsports Johnson CM30 pump and the Lightning/Bosch pump?

Anyone that has used the lightning pump, how many miles do you have on it and have you had any issues with it?

Either pump is going to last, only difference is money and install.

I have read that the lightning is the same pump as the OEM piece of crap pump. Does anyone know for sure if that is true?

Also, is LET still out of stock on the johnson pump?

I'm sure it's priced pretty close, but there has to be some markup. The lightning pump is more common and that I believe brought the price down. More flow doesn't equal more hp.

Yes it's almost identical that's why there is very little to do in order to swap it. The problem I've pointed to is everyone that the pumps have gone out have been cars that sat for a long period of time. Check the ford forums and see if anyone has changed out the bosch pump for a johnson?

i thought the lightning pump required you to swap out the inlet/outlet from the old pump and the johnson was a direct swap?

The lightning requires to swap tops and either get a ford plug or use spades to tap the wires. Stock bracket is used with no modifying. The johnson has different size inlet/outlet so a different hose or clamps are needed along with modifying the stock bracket that holds the pump. Wires connections pretty much the same as lightning pump.

Thanks for the info.

I may just go for the lightning pump and see what happens.

Did you buy it new? As in 05' and been a daily driver since? I'm mainly talking about no original owners who drive their cars has reported one going out. My car only had 200 miles on it when I bought it, and the pump was fine. I just changed it to be sure. It did sit for over 2 years and needed a fuel pump and headlights. Even the wipers were shot. I suspect these pumps are going out from sitting too long without spinning or anything. Most have the magnetic propeller cracked.

I am using the lightning pump. So far so good - can be had for less $80 to $90 (Johnson is $175)
After looking at the factory pump - which really appears to be a hefty design, I am beginning to feel the hose on the factory pump may be involved with the failure.
Only our pump (MB too of course) has a hose connected. I think this hose may be doing the opposite of its intended purpose. Instead of draining I think it may be an inlet for water - any car that sat for any length of time, especially during cold weather, would be damaged by water in the magnetic drive.
I am only guessing but when I took apart my failed factory pump the magent was cracked in half and the inside appeared "rusty"
The lightning pump does not have the connector for the hose - so just plug the hose when the pump is swapped.

it looks like a regular 5 cent spade connector would fit on the pump, has anyone tried that?

They are very small spade connectors....can be done.

I just soldered the wires and black siliconed for water-tight seal.
