Default Has anyone had there 185mm Pulley Fail?

We all know there were some 181mm pulley failures but does anyone know of or has anyone HAD a water pump pulley fail on a 185mm setup?
I lost my entire pulley this weekend at highway cruise speed just desided to go to pieces. I need to know who if anyone has had problems with theirs. This is only for the 185mm failures so smaller pulley owners need not chime in at this time. Nothing like a $460.00 tow charge to put a damper on a weekend.

Have not had a problem. Is yours a daily driver?

Mike,
Can you clarify which pulley failed, crank pulley or wp pulley?

Thats the same thing i was wondering.

Let me give you all a friendly word of advice. Periodically check the 6 hex cap bolts on the crank pulley to make sure they are tight.

This is why I went to the code 3, all the accessories are not over sped. Less stress, but then I really go at it for up to 60 seconds at a time in a run. Woody

The factory pulley is steel, think they have experience in this area.

I don't think any crank pully's failed it was the water pump pulley. It doesn't matter if it was the 178/181/185 pulley, the recall was for the water pump pulley that came with them and that's what the recall addressed.

Not so fast, My 181 sheared the crank key and flew off, killing the water pump, perferated the oil pan, and bent the crank...........so it can happen. Sorry,Woody

I thought you had the water pump pulley go at the same time so you were unsure which happened first, also didn't you take the crank pulley apart before the problem?? not implying any thing just don't remember anyone having crank pulley problems. I do know that when I got mine the center hub was not tight with the allen keys and could have caused a serious problem if I didn't check it first before install.

When you guys see the updated water pump pulley you will never worry about it failing again.

The most important thing about the 185-181 crank pulley is check those hex bolts and use red loc-tite! If you hear something that sounds like rod knock and then see your pulley wobbling rest assured the bolts have lossened and sheared off.

Waldig is the only person i know who sheared the keway off the crank. I dont understand how this could have happened. I have installed/uninstalled my 185 pulley about 15 times now, no issues yet with the keyway. As far as the keyway slot in the 185 its the same as the stock one...just a cut out grove.

While running I got BAS/ESP codes due to overheating and the power loss ( sudden nose dive) caused it to snap back and forth enough to do it in. Not something I wanna deal with again. THere is too many failures going on and someone will get into a real pickle if they are in traffic at the wrong time.

I respect the heck out of your inginuity and what not, but its hard for me to grasp your train of though on this one.

I believe BAS/ESP has to do with the brakes. Overheating also seems unrelated to an oversized crank pulley. If the car nose diving under deceleration is going to destroy a crank pulley by causing it to snap back and forth then it wasnt on tight in the first place.

IIRC, didnt you have to modify your crank pulley to get it to sit flush on the crank? Wondering if this has anything to do with the fact that your the only one with the keyway problem. Im not blaming, simply wondering.

I do agree there are more problems then what should be going on, but the causes are being remedied as they appear. Its got the gears in my head turning(Waldig close).

NEED TO CLARRIFY...
It was the Water Pump Pulley. When I said 185 pulley failure I just assumed since it was the Water pump pulley so often discussed on the forum that everyone would know what I ment. But now that you have mentioned the hex bolts on the main crank pulley I have something else to worry about.

This picture is what my 181 water pump pulley looked like. Unfortunately, I had not seen the recall notice till it was tooooooooooooo late. Jerry had Eric overnight the corrected/new pulley to me. There response was immediate.

That 178mm ASP pulley setup is looking like a pretty safe choice right about now. With Renntech and ASP the only companies that put out pulleys for the MB version of our motor, there is still unknown issues to the motor that the larger pulleys may cause. I know it's been discussed over and over, but if it was safe and proven those companies would of produced them.
