Anyone Else Worry About Water Getting In Through Cai?
ANYONE ELSE WORRY ABOUT WATER GETTING IN THROUGH CAI???
drove today in pouring rain, and was admittedly worried... it's a Needswings intake... (i love it though!!!)
am i being paranoid? i've seen a post of a guy who hydrolocked his crossfire with even the STOCK intake!

I think any water would dry up from the engine heat before it gets to the throttle. If you drive through a 3 foot puddle it mght be a different story though.

Rob from needswing can get you bag that goes on the filter that helps keep water out if you're that worried about it. I think they cost 10 or 15 bucks.

I have a custom made double CAI in my SLK32. When I drive in heavy rain, I put some black adhesive tape on my front grill ( in front of the two cones). This gives me piece of mind...
The air in the CAI is moving up to 157 MPH at WOT and it wont evaporate in the few milliseconds it takes to get to the throttle body. If your air cleaner is on youll be fine as any water would be emulsified before it gets in the cyclinder. The military used to have emergency war power settings on their planes when they needed to go NOW, it was water injection.
To get enough in the motor you gotta have the intake go into big water and you have lost control of the car - floating - by then. Just leave the filter on.
Not an issue unless your racing at the SIPPIHOLE in Florida swamp buggy races.
Enjoy, Woody

I tested the NeedsWings on my car...I even ran the engine when I was blasting the filter with a powerwasher. not a single drop of water was in the back of the tube or in the inlet to the motor.
This past weekend we had standing water in the road....one big section caught me by surprise.....about 5 inches deep at 50 will get your attention in in a hurry. not a single problem.

Had it towed to the dealer and the expert service manager informed me that the motor was seized and that it would have to be replaced. I asked him if they took the plugs out and he gave me a stupid look. I then asked him where he thought the water in the cylinders was going to go
One of these might help protect it from water. K&N also makes them.http://www.autoanything.com/air-filt...A2582A0A0.aspx

Took the plugs out, couple of oil changes and it was fine. I'm sure it doesn't do the engine any good, but it's not catastrophic either.
As long as the filter isn't submerged you should be ok. I have a filter outside the grill also and I just make sure to not be at WOT while it's raining. Just take it easy and you'll have no problems at all.
we have some of the k&n precharger covers (for heavy dust) and also we had the company that makes the drychargers (for heavy water) make one to fit the filter size we use as k&n does not sell the drychargers in our size. i ordered 10 of them a while ago, i think we have 4-5 of them left. i have them for people that want extra piece of mind. they are 19 each, if you guys want one pm me. ill get them on our website eventually.
