Uh Oh noise
Hopefully not a big deal, but with the hood up and the engine running today, I heard a noise similar to a belt fss, fss, fss, fss, fss, fss, fss, fss... You know, it's that sound you hear from old belts on cars with lots of miles on them. Well, that's fine and dandy, but my car only has 15k on it, and to my ear, the sound was coming from the passenger side, aft portion of the engine near the intake manifold. It's definitely something rotating. Oil level is normal and everything seems normal.
Ideas, suggestions? I really don't want to take it to a hackership, but I don't want an internal bearing to go out either. The sound is faint and only audible with the hood up. It sounds like a belt, but in an area where there is no belt.

I would like to suggest putting a 3' piece of garden hose to your ear to asssist and allow you to localize the sound( stethscope like), possibly a vacuum leak at idle. Hopefully NBT, Woody-enjoy.
Big discussion going on about pulley failures. Might want to check those.
Get a length of hose, hold it to your ear and trace the noise down.
Careful!! There are moving parts under there I hear.

I started my car up for the first time in 2 weeks this past weekend. I heard the exact same thing. sounded like a rotating pulley squeal or a belt slip. It would come and go though. I don't think it's the belt. I am leaning towards the idler pulley. The sound was right there. Check yours out. Mine was fairly rusted.
I wont drive it till we decide on a new bearing system. It's just not worth the risk......

The screw driver will help you here more local
and internal noises. A hose will be more general.
Try bolth, or also stop by a local repair shop.
The guys that work on all types of cars can hear
things we dont, thay do it every day.
Good luck with the noise.

Thanks guys, I tried the screwdriver thing and my ear directly on where I thought the sound was (under the intake manifold). All I could hear was the injectors firing. It is illusive! Sounds deep though.

And to think for under $15.00 I was dumb enough to by a mechanics stethescope with the pin point extension!?
Hope you find your, fss fss.

Honest story...probably not your case but worth a shot.
A fellow Wal-Mart customer graciously donated a piece of road debris to a local highway...which ended up tucked up behind the radiator on the my Old Limited crossfire (before I got the SRT-6).
It sounded just like you described...baffled me for WEEKS because it was wedged back where I couldn't see it.
Still missin' my SRT
