Code 3 pulley installed : Pulley rubs/not flat
Code 3 pulley installed : Pulley rubs/not flat
I installed my Code 3 pulley this afternoon. It was new last Nov/Dec when it arrived, however the car being in storage all winter the install had to wait. Well today being my firstweekend off this spring I went to install it.
It seems the backing plate on the pully isnt "flat" On some spots the pulley has 0 tolerance between the SC clutch, others as much as .032.
I have read about shims, however I did not get any with mine. It sat in the box until just this afternoon. I have also read that shims were needed only on the first batch of pulleys (before I even bought my crossfire)
I took a few pics, but curious if anyone else has heard of this? Im gonna head back out to the garage and try and get ahold of Brandon tomorrow.

Re: Code 3 pulley installed : Pulley rubs/not flat
I haven't heard of anyone else with the problem you describe. I have a new pulley in the box that I bought a month ago. No shims were included and I was told that no shims are needed on the new improved pulley. It's not on yet because the car is at the dealer having oil leaks fixed. I plan on doing my install next weekend. I expect the pulley to work as designed but have to admit this makes me nervous.

There is/was another thread here where they had the same problem. You need to remove it and make sure it slides on the shaft straight and bottoms out. Also the post said it took a while for the plate to seat in. I installed mine yesterday, it is the old style with shims though. Went on easy and runs fine.

The install was super easy. The stock pulley is now back on, it takes 10 mins to swap. I took pics of the process to use for future reference incase anyone else needed help. Turns out I am the one asking the questions.
Stock supercharger clutch.

Stock pulley 28k miles. Slid right off, no issues.

Code 3 pulley as I recieved it, before install.

Code 3 installed. Slid right on, right away I noticed something wrong. Thunk! Hit the clutch.

Rotated the pulley noticed a gap along the pulley.

Torqued the pulley down to 20nm (love my snap on digital torque wrench)

Rotate the pulley. Notice a grind noise as it revolves on the shaft. .032 gap.

Everything all back together. Start it up, no noices decide to take it a spin around the block before I put the stock pulley back on. Do a few quick pulls. Come back, pop the hood, loud grinding noise with each revolution.
Put the stock pulley back on and here is the Code 3 in how its worn in with about 3 miles of use.

So... you tell me?

Does yours have any play in the black backing like mine?
I have a similar problem, but I belive it is rubbing do to that black backing having slop in it. Here's a couple videos of what I am talking about.

Damm, that code pulley scares me! The 178 is also easy to install 25 minn tops! Are you planning on stackin the code3 with another pulley? When you mess with that top pulley, I hear the Dealerships notice it right away since they are marked. Bye Bye waranty. I've had mine in for service with the 178, I don't they think can tell. Hope you get it worked out, any pully on a SRT, makes a big Diff.....IMOP....

Where is the straight edge when you need it! My pulley is rocking a little on the desk, ok found something that will suffice. Mine is straight. Yours looks like it got hit with a hammer. Could it be shipping damage? Yours is obviously buggered up.

Yo Crazy,
I had issues with varying clearances when I installed my c3p. Check out this thread for some info.

There's a response from Brian in there also.
"BRIAN: As far as the spacing, its only a problem if there is rubbing. Even then, a small shim will fix the issue usually."

Just contact them and he will send you another...this happens...the next one was perfect...something to do with the way the rivot clamps during assembly...it would work, but rubs, wasn't a problem with the next one...no shims needed with the new ones...

No this was not from shipping, it was packaged well, tight in a nice small box. It sat in the trunk of my car when it was parked all winter in the garage with the C3 pulley, IC, IC pump, and Koni struts in the boxes till spring.
I just pulled them out of the trunk last week.
The back side of the pulley is not true, it is a bit beat up from assembly by the looks of it. I am going to try and get a hold of C3 tomorrow. This is the one part I was really excited about installing all winter long.

tomorrow. from what i'm reading we are back to a quality control issues. From what i've read on this forum brandon has a history of not hearing the phone ring after the sale. hopefully that won't be the case. did you get your wrap kit installed ? what belt did you use ? lets post all our resulutions
from brandon on this thread. good luck all. ILLCYA
