Exclamation Possible Transmission problem?

I just got my SRT6 a little while ago. I have about 10 days left on the 3/36 factory warranty, so I will probably bring it in tomorrow to get it checked out, but I figured I'd ask you all here about what seems like a problem.

When I have the car in drive, and I push the D- twice, sometimes it goes to "1" but most often it only goes to "2" ... I read in the owner's manual that hitting it twice to the left is supposed to drop it into the lowest gear possible without it passing redline.

When it is in "2" and I tap the D- once, it will often flash to "1" then go back to "2". If I'm driving slowly, and want to accelerate, it does the same thing (often only drops to "2" whether I try to manually drop it to "1" or just floor it).

Does this sound like a transmission problem, or some kind of switch is working correctly, or what? I assume it's not supposed to do that.

Oh yeah, the car is in "S" mode ... I think I read in the owner's manual that in "W" mode it starts out in 2nd gear. I don't know if in "W" mode it actually prevents you from running in 1st gear if you try to downshift though. Anyone know?

thanks

Sounds like a problem with the W/S switch, since it refuses to go into first gear. Also sounds like a trip to the stealership to resolve. Dang.

Good luck.

I don't think there's anything wrong with your car.

I have experienced what you describe as downshifting for a split second then automatically upshifting. I was perplexed as to what was happening when I slapped the stick to the left to downshift only to end up in a higher than intended gear.

What was happening was when quickly shifting and letting the shifter rebound under its own spring pressure, the momentum of the shifter was enough to propel it just enough to the right to make an upshift.

Try this again by slapping it and letting it rebound, vs letting the shifter return to the center with your hand.

As far as winter mode is concerned, you can still get into 1st gear in W by tapping left on the shifter.

And as to not kicking down into first gear when flooring it in D, you may already be traveling too fast for what the computer allows the car to do. Think of it, when you floor it and want it to kick down into 1st, you're putting 349 hp to the drivetrain, at full throttle, in the shortest gear. Not the best idea for control.

Keep us updated on what you figure out!

In any event, whether it's working correctly or not, get the thing into the stealership before your warranty expires. Get your problems fully recorded into the car's service log, just in case.

Happy trails.

I should have posted again here earlier. That was indeed all that was happening: the shifter rebounded slightly if I just let it go from all the way one direction or the other. A little gentler release and it is fine. Thanks for your help.

at 10 miles an hour slam the shifter to the left holding it there at the same time floor it ,,it should be in 1 gear at 6000 rpm it will shift to 2 if you hold the shifter to the left and gas to the floor. . jim
