Dangerously close to taking the leap from Limited to SRT-6 - opinions needed
Hello All -
I have been a member since May of 2007, when I purchased my used Limited SSB Coupe w/manual transmission and with 49,500 miles on it for $15,000 - a steal at the time believe it or not! Oh how times have changed.
Back then I had just finished my freshman year of college, and as a gift my parents paid for half of the car, and I used my highschool summer earnings to pay for the other half. I realize that I am blessed by the way so don't take me for a chump!
I had just started an internship that summer and the car was my baby back then. It is still my baby now but it has a few more rock chips in the paint than I care to admit and a very light dent on the rear right quarter panel from a hit and run. The ODO also currently sits at 72,120 miles as of this morning.
Over the years since then, I have enjoyed this forum and learned a good deal about our cars. I will admit I haven't posted as much recently, but I am still on here at least once a day checking up on things.
Moving forward... that internship has turned into a full time job now, and with a nice salary coming in, my desire to have the power of the AMG built SRT-6 engine has exponentially increased.
This weekend I am going to look at this one in Silver Spring, MD if it is still available, and take a test drive:
2005 Chrysler Crossfire SRT-6, $15,995 - Cars.com
Aero Blue SRT-6 with 44,000 miles, the dealer is asking $15,999
I have spoken with the salesman and the car seems to be in good shape. Knowing that my car will most likely trade-in at an abysmal $5K or $6k, I am bracing for the worse.
I am very much on the fence about this decision, as I had originally planned to wait another two or three years and spring for something bigger... something along the lines of a Mercedes C55 or C63 (if I could afford it).
However, an opportunity has presented itself. My sister, now a freshman in college needs a car, and my parents may offer me the KBB value of the car (around $6,000) which I would use as a down payment on the SRT-6. This would be opposed to trading in my Limited Coupe to the dealership.
Sorry for the nostalgic rambling but I'll get to the point (finally
)...
Assuming the test drive goes well this Saturday, I would like to start my asking price at $14,000 and work from there. Does this seem like a reasonable point? Higher or lower?
Secondly, my reasonable side says, "just enjoy your Limited for a few more years and then upgrade to something else", while the youthful/spirited side says, "you are young and can afford it now (barring some catastrophic job loss)! Plus these SRTs are a steal right now!"
Your words or encouragement or reason are appreciated regarding the above!
Third of all, and yes I have looked through the forums already for tips on recurring problems with the SRT-6... any glaring things to look for this Saturday when I go to check out the car?
And lastly, selling the car to the sister as opposed to trading it in? Any thoughts on pros or cons? (Side Note: The sister really wants a Crossfire thankfully for me!)
As usual, I appreciate any feedback I get here. This forum rocks!

Having owned a NA and upgraded to the SRT there is no comparison. The biggest problem for you that I see is after you make the test drive not giving away to the salesman how bad you want it because it will be really hard to get the big a** grin off your face. I hope you are good at poker.
floor it a bunch and get it really hot if it all the sudden becomes slow i/c pump is probably bad.
check the valve cover gaskets for leaks, and if you can lift the car check the stabilizer shock near the steering rack for leaks too. if the hood is hard to open the shock is going out that holds the hood open and thats $150 or so.
good luck.

I keep wanting something new myself but everytime I floor it all thoughts go away! Do it trust me.
for that amount of miles you could do better offer him 500. less because of miles or just look around for one with less than 30,000 miles on it jim i do not own and i have not seen this car.

This car is very clean and has not been in any accidents. The body and interior are in perfect condition. The car has only 16,000 miles, and has been garage kept since it was purchased. Contact Irwin at 561-742-0448

Having changed from the N/A to the SRT myself, I have to say I regret nothing. IMO they are two completely different cars each with their positives and negatives. However, the SRT is a one-of-a-kind car (or should I say 2944-of-a-kind) that turns heads even more than the N/A. You will rarely see another SRT unless you seek them out, and people are always giving your car (or you) the once over.
It is a fantastic machine, improved even more by modifying it to add a little more performance...seems like the bit of modifying puts it right where it needs to be.
Best SRT moment for me has probably happened to quite a few people. At the track after your first pass, hearing loads of people go "what the hell was that" after you knock out a low 12s run....priceless.
...on a different note...
I will be down in the VA area this weekend. If you wanted someone to tag along to the dealer I'd be more than happy to help (assuming its close to where I'll be)... or if you want a ride in mine I will be more than happy to oblige...though I have a feeling that will send you into the black hole to visit the mad hatter and you will not be able to stop thinking about getting a SRT
The Eurocharged guys will be in VA this weekend doing tuning if you wanted to stop by there should be a couple SRTs there as well as a few MBs.
Here is where it is:
Function Tuned
23571 Pebble Run Dr., Unit 145
Dulles, VA 20166
Send me a PM and let me know if you want to get together. Good luck with the shopping.
EDIT: Looks like it is about 40miles from the shop to the dealer...not too bad.

If you can manage it, go for the SRT. You will always want one. And it will nag you if you don't.
That said, $16K for one with 44,000 on the clock is high. Unless it is perfect. If your parents give you cash for yours (a good plan as it will make them happy and your sister happy) then the dealer doesn't have to worry about re-selling it.
Put's you in a better position to negotiate. Add to that the fact that dealers don't want these cars on the lot and you should be able to bargain hard.
An Aero Blue coupe in Dallas Fort Worth was on Ebay for $11,900 NO RESERVE. It had that milage and got no bids. A more recent gray one went begging at $13,000.
Show them those deals if you want. I'll PM you the links later today.
I would start at $14K. Tell them to call you when they are ready to deal. Hold firm cause there are plenty of them out there right now.
If your budget will allow it, I say go. You couldn't be in a better position and in a few years, these super deals on SRT's will be gone.

Great responses from all, thank you. Franc please do send me those links if possible, its always good to go in with as much ammo as possible.
After reading the comments, and researching other prices, the price does seem high given the 44,000 miles. I do think the fact that the car is in Northern VA/Maryland is one thing factoring into the inflated price.
A fellow member in MD has PMed me about selling their similar SRT6 (same color but with 14,500 miles) for the same price. May check that out as well. It would be nice to avoid the stealership and deal with a fellow forum member. I would be more willing to pay that asking price for a car with low miles. But that would only work if my parents did buy the car, and I did not do a trade-in.
Your words of encouragement have definitely done nothing to appease my desire to make the purchase!
At the end of the day it comes down to the fact that I have never been satisfied with the power of the Limited (not that I am speed demon either) and given the fact I plan to drive it for a few more years anyways, that is if I don't upgrade to an SRT6, I would rather drive do the upgrade and be content for the next few years rather than always wanting more power.
That being said, it is my understanding that the craving for increased horsepower never dissipates, no matter how many times you upgrade.

Just as a quick add-on to what Franc said.
I purchased my SRT for $16.5k with only 18k miles on the ODO.
I would definitely agree that $14k would be a starting point, and frankly about $14.5k would be a price ceiling.

Are you willing to travel for the 'perfect' car? If you've been on the Forum much in the last year, you probably know of several members that have flown quite a distance to pick up their car from a member and drive it home. Ask them today and they will tell you that the bought with more confidence and satisfaction than at a dealership.
I N V U..... I'd like to add an SRT to our stable.
by all means, get the right car. the lowest mileage "usually" equals best condition with a few caveats (history, storage, cold or warm weather, etc.). the dealership car would be my last choice. since you already own a n/a, you know the ownership parameters. buy the right one and don't look back.
If I had to make a choice, I'd stick with my original, the roadster with a stick. I bought it because it reminded me of my first 2-seater sports car, a TR6, except it has better electronics (better everything, actually). That said, I was in the position to buy an SRT6 with low mileage (8500) at a reasonable price ($21k in Jan 2008) in exactly the color I wanted -- matched my roadster. They are different cars. I do not hesitate to take the roadster from MI to CT, or up into WI or Canada. I'm thinking of taking it out of winter storage and going to FL in April. On the other hand, I rarely drive the SRT6 long distance because of it's harsher ride and lower gas mileage -- and the fear of getting a speeding ticket because it is so much FUN to go fast. Now, maybe, if I added a graphite gray SRT6 roadster.....
I do believe at this rate, we will account for all the SRTs out there...seems like the number of multiple owners is growing....
