Moving to Germany... to bring the SLK32 or not
So I got the orders/job I wanted in Gielenkirchen Germany. I won't move until Feb '11. That at least gives me some time to figure out what to to do with my house and cars...
While I'd LOVE to have the 32 back in the 'motherland', I'm concerned with it being my only vehicle. My other car is an '01 VW Beetle 1.8 turbo. While NO comparison, I did have it in Alaska with me and it fared ok in the snow...
Since the military will only pay to ship 1 car, I have a few choices:
- take the 32
- take the VW
- take both and pay to ship 1 out of pocket
- sell the VW, store the 32 in MA at my buddies place and buy something over there....
I'll be living in Germany fro a min of 3yrs and possibly up to 4 1/2.
So I'd like to here from those that in Europe that have SRT/32's... No matter what I'm excited as hell... I'd just really like to travel the beautiful countryside Of EU in the 32 with the top dropped.

Congrats on the Job. And sorry for the quandry you find yourself in. Either
choice is liable to have some drawback. If I were in your spot, I'd take the 32 and leave the volkswagon behind. If you can swing it to take both, do
that, but you've got to have a go at the autobahn with your 32...
Just my two centavos...

awesome allen!! how about takin the bug and buying a porsche while your there!!!! of course you cant leave until you find out if wavetrac is going to make a diff for us!!
Well, talked to a couple guys that have been stationed at GK... I guess it rarily snows, I just need to be cautious of the black ice. Decision made, sell the VW and take the 32...
And yes, steve, I'm still working the Wavetrac deal. So far I'm not too impressed with thier speed of getting me more details... However, I'd like to get this done before I move!

be careful on the autobahn.... they have speed limits (with cameras!) scattered along it..... I got my picture taken last Oct by not slowing down quick enough.....
I would think there would be a lot of SLK "Type" cars in Germany.
Sell that puppy and buy a 70's Nova to take over - "DARE TO BE DIFFERENT"

Congrats on the assignment Allan. I lived in Stuttgart for 3 years. I took a new SUV with me when I went, and ended up buying a BMW 735i after I got there. I was amazed at the good deals that you could find from GI's that were transferring back to the states and wanted to drive the car till the last minute. Then they would unload them at a bargain price. Of course, that was back in 1986, so things have probably changed a lot since then. You can have a lot of fun going up to Bremerhaven to pick your car up.... just hold on to your wallet in the red light district. LOL
buggin, before you get to enthralled with bringing your SLK to Germany, you might want to check on the laws that have to do with bringing american cars over and registering them there. (if that's what you need to do) I bought and sent a mustang GT to Germany a few years ago and my relatives over there had a hell of a time making it pass there requirements. Different glass had to be installed, different seat belts, bumpers and more that I can't remember. They are stricter than we are believe it or not.
If you can leave it registered in the states then disregard this.

Yeah, I hear they have stricter rules, but I would hope that my car would pass as it was built in Stuttgart... But I guess it was probably built to US spec.
I'll definately read all the intricacies of thier regs...

PS: If you had an SRT6, I would say keep it for sure, of course I may be a bit biased... ;-)

since I still have payments on the 32 til Sep 11, don't think I'll be buying another car... I am just an enlisted dude in the Air Force...
And for bang for the buck, these motors are pretty incredible. Since I just got news from Wavetrac that we might get our LSD made, I am a about keeping this car...
Good question. I'm headed to Stuttgart this fall and have been searching all night for SRT6 prices in Germany. I will store my 70 GTO, but will take the SRT and hope to sell it. The MB headquarters is right outside Kelly Barracks. Maybe folks working there will appreciate their own motor?!
BTW. I did an assignment to England several years ago and shipped a second car on my own dime. Not as much as you might think.

You will need to make sure that ALL of your safety items are fully up to snuff, especially tires and the like.
The reason that sections of the autobahn are successfully able to be left without speed limiting is because their restrictions are SO tight, that a vehicle break-down is far less common. A tire blowout that would be a daily occurrence over here, could cause a deadly multi vehicle crash over there.
However, being that your car was built in Germany to begin with, I don't think you'll need to change much hardware on the car, just make sure it is all up to spec.

There should be no discussion IMO. If you are going to take your car to any country, that is one of the best. Find the right dealership and they will pamper that car like no one can.
As to the autobahn, it has been many years since I lived there and quite a few since I last visited. You will enjoy, but like suggested, do be mindful of the parts that have limits. Also, if you see someone flashing their headlights at you while in the fast lane, MOVE.
Enjoy and keep us updated.
