Default Clunking - shifting into reverse when parked at a incline???

Hello all,
I noticed that when I park my SRT6 at any incline and shift out of park into reverse, there's a good "clunk" noise. Does anyone else have/notice the same issue?
It's loud enough at times that I go out of my way not to park at an incline.

Thanks in advance for your inputs.

Regards,
-Az4R1

Yeah mine did that as well.. when i wasn't used to an auto car yet.. not a good noise.. put the car in nuetral pull the hand brake all the way up and let your foot off the brake. then put it in park.

cant give you specifics but based on what you wrote i would start with checking the pastic washers in the shifter linkage, then on to the trans mount, then the carrier bearing. sounds like play when engaged in reverse and an angle puts the right amount of stress on the part

Thanks guys... yeah, it's definitely not a good noise. I do understand that auto trans cars do make some noise when shifting out of park, especially when parked on a hill etc. But this sounds painful to the car.

I'm trying to be more specific on the actual noise... it's definitely a metal clunk, noise of parts/gears touching with significant force, enough to make me cringe! And, I say ouch every time it happens

BMWs already solved it for ya, no need to be more specific on the description It's the pressure (from the weight of the car rolling either forward or back) on the that park 'Pawl' inside the trans. If you set your brake, go to neutral to let the car settle against the brake, then go to park, a cookie says the noise won't happen when you go to leave

My suggestion is to always back the car up onto any incline. That way you never have to use reverse. Go straight to "D".

Yeeeeah...isn't this just common for EVERY automatic car? I always pull the parking brake, let the car settle (foot off pedal brake), and then put the car in park.

**EDIT** - haha...sorry...somebody already said it above me...oh well more info for the OP!

I'm going to try the parking brake step... see what happens. I'm saying "shift into reverse noise" but its more of the shifting out of park noise now that I'm thinking about it.

Thanks all!

p/s: Michigan is very much into fall, leaves are changing colors... soon will be time for hibernation for the Xfire... sigh

Check the driveshaft guide bearing.

theres northing wrong with the car, like mentioned above use the ebrake in neutral let off foot brake then put in park. your putting the weight of the car on the park lever in the trans creating a bind. when you pull it out of park you release this pressure. if you continue to not use the ebrake you will bend the park lever, either snapping it or bending it into the drum causing a loss of neutral or park all togther.

I have a 'stick' and mine does a similar thing. When backing down the driveway in neutral if I were to hit the brakes I would get a 'loud clunking noise.' Pump the brakes and get it every time. I had the driveshaft bearing replaced so that's not it. Help!

Doubt if it's the brakes.
