Default Boostmonkey mods: SLK32 AMG custom exhaust, Flowmaster Super 40

I finished my custom exhaust on the SLK32 AMG (SRT6). Here is the video: You'll need computer speakers with a subwoofer to get the whole effect. It is LOUD, which is exactly what I wanted. It is very frustrating sitting beside a car with open headers on the starting line and not being able to hear or feel the engine. Looking back and forth between the tach and the tree is just asking to cut a bad light. I did leave a place to install a glasspack resonator if it ends up being too loud on the street.

Mercedes Benz SLK32 AMG custom exhaust, Flowmaster Super 40 - YouTube

Specs:
  • Flowmaster Super 40 muffler, 3" offset inlet, dual 2.5" outlets
  • Hedman 4" tips (cut short)
  • all 3" mandrel bent tubing
  • Magnaflow 3" Y-pipe
  • factory headers
  • I installed two Flowmaster 3" ball flanges to allow for some misalignment and to give me a couple places to take it apart.
  • I retained the factory ground straps, and most of the factory hanger locations
  • I'm trying the "spark plug non-fouler" rear O2 sensor trick with additional spacers welded on.
I'd try to get a video of it driving, but I need a Wavetrac diff first. That should happen soon hopefully.

Pics:

I grabbed some VHT Flameproof primer to paint the welds to prevent corrosion. It went on so well I just painted the whole thing.

The new system is 30 lbs lighter than the OEM system. Most of the weight savings is in the muffler. That thing is HEAVY.

Oh! I have a new exhaust! Again. This is version 4. I have not been keeping this thread updated well.

Version 2: I added a small bullet resonator to remove some of the harsh high frequency sounds. This helped a little.

Version 3: Then I removed that bullet resonator and installed a larger Magnaflow glasspack resonator. Much better. This version sounded AWESOME. I got compliments on it all the time, even from the domestic V8 guys.

Version 4: I replaced the Flowmaster Super 40 with a Magnaflow 14x9 to quiet it down - which worked. The Super 40 sounded amazing, but was super loud and had a horrid drone at 75 mph. A 1200 mile round trip to the beach nearly left me deaf. The Magnaflow is only 50% as loud, and actually quiets down around 75 mph.

I replaced the Magnaflow y-pipe with a Flowmaster Scavenger y-pipe. I had an odd sound coming from the y-pipe and I thought it was resonance from the stamped y-pipe walls. My thought was that the Flowmaster Scavenging y-pipe would eliminate this - which mostly worked. The sound is 90% gone.

I had to relocate the 3" ball joints for disassembly to new locations to make room for the longer Flowmaster Scavenger Y-pipe and Venturi 3.5" to 3" reducer.

New video coming... eventually.

Nice update!!

Tell me more about the option 3...

So it's option #1, plus a Magnaflow glasspack? Was that the combo that nearly made you deaf? LOL...

Yes. You've got it. 3" pipes, no cats, magnaflow y-pipe, magnaflow 6x14 round muffler used upstream as a resonator, flowmaster super 40 with single 3: inlet, dual 2.5" outlets, and 4" tips.

I find I actually drive a little faster now around town because I think people can only hear me ONE mile away, vs across the whole town. :|

Forgive me for being so crass, but what did the final setup cost, excluding parts bought, installed and then removed...

I estimate about $800. Not including the parts installed and removed.

Exhaust version 5 is installed.

Going with stacked pulleys and a Eurocharged tune legitimately made the car louder under throttle.

For this round the Magnaflow oval glass-pack muffler was replaced with a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler. It is considerably quieter under WOT. It still sounds aggressive, but won't attract attention from as far a distance when I'm standing on the throttle. While cruising, the sound is almost identical to the Magnaflow.

For when I DO want loud, I installed a 3" electric cutout. > With the cutout open, it is way too loud for normal driving around. I can definitely see myself opening it for low-speed cruises, pulling into cars 'n coffee, drag racing, etc.

1/4 times with the cutout open / closed and new videos will be coming.

For now, here is a video comparison of open pipes, Flowmaster Super 40 Series, Magnaflow glasspack, and Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers.

The Flowmaster is a Super 40. The Super 40 is a delta flow muffer and is a little quieter than the Super 44, but it flows more due to the thicker case.

The Flowmaster is my favorite sound of the three. It is too loud to live with though. Keep in mind that the video above was just revving the engine with no load in park. On the street with a load on the engine, they are much louder.

I am near Columbus. I am willing to drive a bit for car shows and get togethers though.

I tested the cutout at the drag strip. Opening the cutout improved my 1/4 mile time by .086, or just under a tenth.
