I read somewhere on these hallowed forums that the auto-dimming mirror was removed from all Crossfires in 2005 to help cut back on the production costs? Don't know how much truth is behind that but there you go.
Confirmed.

Nissan does this stuff quite often, especially if a model is a slower seller than initially projected. Saving $10 per component from a direct supplier cost standpoint, multiplied times 20,000 vehicles (avg) a year = $200,000.

Per part. Per platform. You can quickly see that this adds up. When it comes down to brass tacks, the manufacturers simply hope you won't notice. Or care.

They should have at least offered it as an option on 2005+ Crossfires, especially on the halo SRT model.

Good point. And agree definitely on it being an option. It is one of those features you go without for years and never think of it when driving at night, but as soon as you drive a car with the auto-dimming mirrors (I feel most notably, one with the side mirror dimmers), it is impossible to get used to it. One of those "can't unsee" things.

Easily remedied, I bought a batch of 3 auto-dimming 2004 crossfire mirrors last year from a recycler listed on Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market

I installed one, traded maxchicon #2 and sold #3 to a guy in NJ for the $25 I paid + shipping .....

As to the outside mirrors, it would be nice if there was some way to retrofit auto-dimmers, but I can't think of any ......

Interesting concept - autodimming....
how does it work...? doesnt it need a 12V Power supply to activate some crystals or something?

Yes, it uses a light sensor in the mirror.
It goes to day time mode for reverse if you want to hook up the extra wire.

IIRC the auto dimming side mirror (on the SLK) is activated by the rear-view mirror (I seem to recall that the rear view has 2 sensors in it that compare light from behind the car to light ahead of the car)

I was removing the drivers side mirror on an slk32 and noticed the extra connecter (3 pin if memory serves)

what am I getting at?
well, if someone wanted to retrofit this to a crossfire (and already has both of the mirrors) it is do-able and I would be happy to help by supplying the mercedes connector part numbers (and the schematic if needed).

With the side mirrors adjusted to the best and safest driving position, I find that light from a following car is not reflected into my eyes from the side mirrors.

The -10c mod makes your electric fan come on at a lower temp (-10c). The change is not limited to -10; that is just a common amount to change it (hence the name).

This is popular with some E55 guys and presumably this change can be made on any MBZ (and SRT-6?) in the "correction programming" of the motor electronics (ME) section.

debatable benefits, essentially keeps fan on most of the time once the engine has warmed up (since the fan switching point is changed independent of the thermostat operation temp).

Here is a link to doing it on an E55 with screen shots .... post #25 (note the caption for the last screen shot is wrong in that it suggests putting in a negative value)

Some really like this, but I have had a Star for years and have never bothered with this on any of my AMGs

Cheers,

You know, I've wondered about this mod which came included in our Eurocharged tune. Even in the middle of Summer (100-110deg.'s ambient) after pushing hard at the road course track or autocross, I've rarely experienced the highest speed of the fan kick in (maybe only a couple of times). I get a peace of mind feeling about this, and that our cooling system is well engineered and working as it should be.

I checked with Jerry at Eurocharged, and he confirmed that my car already has the mod excellent!!

The -10c mod didn't take on my car for some reason. I don't mind. My car seems to be faster with hot coolant temperatures as long as the IAT's are reasonable. Cool IAT's are what matters.

Old post I know but my LOL for the day. Reminded me one of the first times sitting at a stop light in my SRT with a Ford pick-up behind me and all I could see in the rearview mirror was the blue Ford oval. Light turns green... the blue oval goes to entire truck that goes to entire truck a tiny 1/4" dot in the mirror within 5 seconds.
