They are by a brand called febi which I have used a couple of times on my other car (Audi S4) and never had any issues

Here is a pic of the old/new. The only thing different I saw in the mount (beside it being in one piece) is that it didnt have the metal rivet in the side of it
Haaaaa. That explains everything! Mine were Lemförder. They were a little larger, even in diameter, although they are supposed to be the "exact OEM replacement blablabla".
Yours are not, that's why you did not have to remove anything else. Well, that's a very interesting piece of information that I have not seen anywhere else. Glad we got to the bottom of it. Thanks for the pics.

I used a swivel head ratchet and a 5/8 socket (did not have a 16mm, the bolt on my car were not 17mm as stated elsewhere in this thread).
I could reach in and have some leverage, but only 2-3 clicks at a time. Once loose I could unscrew by hand.
